Aurora from Northern Ohio. At times it covered the sky all the way to the southern horizon. Really fantastic. Mostly looks white to the naked eye but sometimes a hint of red is visible. Lots of colors on the photos. These were taken with my pixel phone handheld.

Was thinking about today and that reminded me of the excellent guest role Padma Lakshmi had on Enterprise which made me want to ask y'all: Who's been your favorite guest star/role across the franchise?

nickgb,
@nickgb@wargamers.social avatar

@jann @nocontexttrek Tony Todd is who you are thinking of. Also played Worf's brother Kurn in several episodes, and.a Hirogen on voyager.

He was fantastic as old Jake in The Visitor.

Went out tonight and saw more satellites than Perseids. Thanks so much, Elon.

nickgb,
@nickgb@wargamers.social avatar

@cgseife Me too. I was out for an hour and a half. Six meteors, five of which were perseids.

Probably saw more than a dozen satellites, most of which were a string of recently launched Starlink satellites rising from the west in a closely spaced string, all of them brighter than any 1st mag stars, until they rose to the zenith and passed into Earth's shadow and disappeared.

Brightest starlink string I have ever seen.

Meteors were cool though, most left brief visible trails.

I just volunteered to lead a stargazing thing at my local library, which should be exciting - mostly I use big telescopes that professional observers run for me, because I'm a spoiled professional astronomer.

So, hey astronomers (especially amateurs with small scopes)! What are your favourite targets to look at in the sky with a small scope at this time of year? Bonus points if they're pretty easy to find! (It's a just-after-sunset observing session, last quarter moon, so no moon, darn)

nickgb,
@nickgb@wargamers.social avatar

@sundogplanets I am doing a Perseid viewing party for my library in a couple of weeks (northern Ohio). Will also have some scopes set up. On my list:

Mars (will be low in the west and set quickly)
NGC 457 Owl Cluster
M81
M82
NGC 4565 Needle Galaxy
M51
M4
M13
M20
M8
M24
M17
M16
M57
NGC 6826 (blinking planetary)
Albiereo (double star)
Mu Cephei (Garnet star)
M27
NGC 7293 (Helix nebula)
Saturn (rising at about sunset, won't be high enough until later)
NGC 7662 (Blue Snowball Nebula)
NGC 7789 (Caroline's Rose cluster)

I'm sure I won't get to all of these, but many good objects here for my 11 inch to show folks, and I have a UHC filter to enhance some of the nubulae.

Jupiter is always great, but won't rise until after midnight, and we never have folks stay after 11:30 or so.

@nyrath @FredKiesche It's a Klingon battleship from the old FASA Star Trek ship combat game. I wouldn't call it ultra rare, though I guess maybe they didn't make many in the production run? eBay chasing the desperate collector I guess.

nickgb,
@nickgb@wargamers.social avatar

@FredKiesche @nyrath I have I think 2 FASA minis, and a bunch of SFB, but I really only play with counters. Probably because I only ever painted one ship...

@nyrath @FredKiesche Mine was the venerable Fed Heavy Cruiser. Not bad for a first attempt. (Lou Zocchi plastic) No decals or anything fancy.

Painted Fed heavy cruiser mini from the side.

24 hours of Earth's rotation, with the camera locked to the sky instead of the ground. We're all hanging out on this spinning rock.

@coreyspowell Very cool. Took me a bit to realize this was the southern hemisphere, with the large and small Magellanic clouds alongside the Milky Way.
