Another cheeky sign in London. This store sells rubber ducks and was fed up with the construction of the building it's part of.

@nicole, why do you link the titles in your notes?

Like this: [[{{title}}]]

nicole,

@austingovella It's so that the heading changes if I change the filename of the note!

Sign in my hotel room in London. The door was stuck, and the maintenance crew helpfully "fixed" it by putting up a sign. Naturally I got transferred to a room with, you know, a door that actually opens and closes.

For visual notes to fit into your Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system, you're going to need to be able to link them and embed them just like you would any other notes. Here's a video where I talk about how to link/embed to visuals, text within visual notes, and even parts of visuals with Obsidian Excalidraw by @zsviczian: https://youtu.be/lGh53N_Lj2Q

TIL how to enable the new Explore Logs app for . Turns out the latest versions of Loki and don't work with it yet, so you have to specify the right versions and change a few other things in the Docker Compose config. It's so cool that this is open source and not Cloud-only.

My notes here: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/How+to+enable+Explore+Logs+for+Loki

And here's a repo tying in a sample app + Alloy + Loki + Grafana in Docker: https://github.com/grafana/loki-fundamentals/tree/what-is-loki . Working on a video to explain it all!

Got set up and synced using Obsidian Sync on my install. That's a big yay.

Now we'll start the vs tussle. May the better solution win.

Got to say that finding a good syncing solution for orgmode is critical. And github isn't it. Suggestions welcome.

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@h_d @birv2 I was coming here to suggest Syncthing too! That would be my pick.

Been using Slurp (an plugin) a few days now. For safe keeping info that can skip my Omnivore flow. (E.g. blood test results. Or recommendations for a holiday spot.)

It works well!

“Slurps webpages and saves them as clean, uncluttered Markdown. Think Pocket, but better.”

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@geffrey I'm really wanting to suss out all the options on this space. Why would you want to bypass your Omnivore flow? And why not use Readwise?

Good advice on avoiding pointless meetings here. If I've ever given you a Reclaim link to book time on my calendar, you might have noticed that I block out two No-Meeting Days a week. Mondays are for video filming, and Thursdays are for coding or other engineering work. If I didn't do this, I would feel like I spend more time talking about what I want to do than actually doing it.

I just watched a video from CyanVoxel about his setup and loved the theming of his vault so much that it got me down the rabbit hole of installing all the snippets and fonts. The screenshot is of a note where I applied the Manila background and gray pen!

@ivory I’m seeing a lot of missing profile pictures on Ivory iOS and MacOS. Doesn’t seem to be a particular server and they appear when I open them in a browser. Resetting cache sync in the settings did nothing. Or do I need to log out and in again?

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@apolaine @ivory +1 to this. I'm seeing the same thing, and only on Ivory for macOS and iOS. Opening an affected account's page in the browser or in another client displays the profile photo without any issues.

I've always struggled with the idea of visual note-taking because I'm not great at drawing and honestly, if I had to choose between text and images, I would always choose text. But recently, @zsviczian told me I didn't have to choose. Here's a video of how I now take hybrid notes (textual AND visual) by default, using the Obsidian Excalidraw plugin: https://youtu.be/zmgqMZi6QL8

One of the most difficult things about being a Developer Advocate for a company like @grafana is explaining how everything fits together. I'm (relatively) new to the company myself, having joined through an acquisition, so figuring out what everything does is something that I've had to do as well. Here's a video to help others piece together all the moving parts of the projects that make up Grafana Labs: https://youtu.be/WSW1urIXsfA

We're releasing 3.0 at today, and I have to learn the new features just like everyone! (But better, because I have to talk to people about them too…)

Here are my notes about the new features, including native support for , one Helm chart to rule them all, bloom filters for full text search, and a new visual logs UI on Grafana Cloud to make learning LogQL easier.

Tomorrow: I'll be at the "Ask the Experts" booth 16:00-17:00 for k6/Tempo/Pyroscope.
On Wednesday, I'll be there at 09:00-10:30 and then I'm leading the Unconference from 14:45-16:45. Come ready for informal discussions about !

What happens when you go to a work conference (KubeCon in Paris) and then go straight from that to a hobby one (PKM Summit in Utrecht)? Well, in my case, you throw together a talk that's a mix of both of those passions. Here's me rehashing a talk I did at PKM Summit that was all about relating system observability to what it might mean to make your Personal Knowledge Management system observable too:

Musing this morning about @nicole 's talk applying Observability to her . The metaphor doesn't fit well for me. My/her is a system, but a complex one: adding observers adds interdependencies increasing the complexity reducing its observability essentially. Also the purpose of observability in control theory (where I learned it) and software seem at odds with the purpose of . Perhaps best fit is as stabilising feedback in control theory. Writing to pinpoint my doubts/friction.

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@ton I really love hearing your point of view on this!
I think observability is even more important for complex systems than for simple ones. Observability DOES add some complexity, but necessary complexity. Being able to see what's going on in a microservices-based system, for example, is SO much harder than in a monolithic one. The more moving parts, the harder it is to see the big picture.

I'm often pasting images (screenshots) into Excalidraw, but when I do that, images are automatically imported into Obsidian as something like "Pasted Image 20240327192423_924.png”. Well, @zsviczian just told me there's an Excalidraw script for that, called "Rename image”-- and it's also hotkeyable. Thanks, Zsolt!

I do think it's amusing that now even my plugins have plugins. ;)

Tricentis flood.io is shutting down. They suggest to use NeoLoad instead starting at $20k… 🙄

I never used flood professionally, but played around with it a couple of times over the years. They started a year before we founded StormForger and I took a brief look at their Ruby JMeter plugin (died when they got bought by Tricentis 7y ago). Oh, and I do remember various of flood's articles in their blog by @nicole which I liked quite a lot!

nicole,

@tisba Sad about this, though I did start to see the signs when we were acquired and that did cause me to move to k6. Different priorities, I guess! Happy you liked the articles. I loved my time at Flood and still keep in touch with some folks from those days.
