Is Lord Of The Rings the last popular movie trilogy that really nailed it?

I would qualify a trilogy as being three movies which were conceived as being three movies and are telling one story split up across three movies.

By that definition, I can only think of the original Star Wars trilogy and LOTR where all three movies are good and they stick the landing.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@collin Dune might be getting there if Part 3 gets greenlit as that’d wrap up Paul’s arc. 🤞

LittleSnitch 6 looks excellent, in particular the new blocklists feature. The fair non-subscription upgrade pricing is worth a special callout these days, too. Instant purchase! https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/whatsnew.html

People say that the sound quality in Apple Music is way better than in Spotify. What is the technical explanation here?
It can't be a problem of the encoding pipeline. This problem has been solved decades ago.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@obrhoff Maybe licensed to different recordings? Apple Music has a lot of “Apple Digital Master” icons and many remasters.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@obrhoff Good question. There’s this document from Apple but I personally don’t have enough knowledge to assess it: https://www.apple.com/apple-music/apple-digital-masters/docs/apple-digital-masters.pdf

How did I only just now discover the amazing ability in OmniFocus for visionOS to scan documents with a nearby iOS device!!! It even showed my my 2017 10.5” iPad Pro - you just select whatever device you want to use and it launches the camera app from a locked device state into a special scanning mode and sends those scans directly over to OmniFocus for visionOS - pure magic how well this works - so cool!!! @OmniFocus @kcase

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@tchaten @OmniFocus @kcase Is that the same feature as Continuity Camera on macOS or something specific to OmniFocus?

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@tchaten @OmniFocus @kcase That made me curious. According to Apple’s docs Continuity Camera isn’t available on visionOS, so it might be a custom implementation: https://support.apple.com/en-au/108046

Very much enjoyed my first time taking the sleeper train from Sydney to Melbourne. Comfy bed, good service, convenience of going city centre to city centre, and a hot shower in the morning. I think the train’s about my age though.

GPT-4.omni would be amazing to answer and handle all phone calls without caller ID and from numbers not in my address book. Only let the valid non-spammy ones through to me. Take that robo calls. Let the AIs fight it out.

With a native ChatGPT desktop app and free support for GPT-4o in ChatGPT, I suspect that there’s no longer much need for an app like WitKit to exist. We’ll see once this stuff actually rolls out.

WWDC may revive the concept, though, we’ll see!

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@brandonhorst Been thinking about this. The key benefit something like WitKit would bring at this stage is supporting multiple providers. I'm tinkering with running open models on my laptop through Ollama, and this opens up a variety of use cases where I'm not comfortable uploading everything to ChatGPT, like code bases or my Obsidian vault. Would be nice to have a single app to access various LLMs. There are a bunch of Mac apps out there for this but nothing "Mac-assed".

I really get the feeling that AAA games are dying.

Layoffs everywhere, huge budgets, too big to fail; indie devs are eating their lunch and ex-McKinsey MBAs are leading the Xbox division into their disaster. It was cool while it lasted… but maybe its a good thing.

I wonder why Valve is not laying off people. Maybe it's because they understand gamers and keep career-centric managers out?

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@obrhoff Valve haven’t created much in terms of notable AAA games since Portal 2 in 2011. There’s Alyx and CS2, but compare that to what they did the in the 13 years before starting with Half-Life 1. Steam really has taken over. Kinda proves your point. It’s not layoffs but a change in focus, where resources go, and similar drop in output.

Vision Pro is going to be an even harder sell now that iPad is two CPU generations ahead of it. You just know too that, like every single first-gen Apple product, it's going to be left behind by OS updates way sooner than you'd hope 😔

Folks,

I recently read that Goodnotes (the iPad app) describes itself as an "AI note-taking app" and immediately got worried.

Is this still a good app? (I held it in high standards)

Are they turning bad or evil?

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@ctietze Besides the tagline the only thing I could find on their website is this detailed study, which looks insightful: https://www.goodnotes.com/research/generative-ai-in-schools. Good on them for taking a science-based approach and starting with the implications of those new tools.

Well, that was weird. I pressed play on a track in Apple Music and it sat on if for a fraction of as second and then went on to the next… and the next… and the next. It did this about 20 times before I quit the app. Restarted and it’s all fine now. But yeesh at the Mac app.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@craiggrannell The underlying MusicKit framework has similar behaviour seemingly randomly. This happening in the Music app gives me a glimmer of hope that Apple will fix this and related issues. (Longplay for Mac has been in limbo due to MusicKit issues for which there are no workarounds.)

@danielbowen My 1.5 year old is at 88% already. The always-on screen and me being an iOS developer probably worsen the battery health more quickly.

My 2018 Pro was such a great purchase. Five and a half years later the A12x, 4GB, 4G are still perfectly fine for iOS. I am mildly tempted by the new pencil, purple tint option of the new Air, and the screen of the new Pro, but none of that would change how I use an iPad, how much I use it or what I use it for. Let's see if the next iOS changes that.

There will be a small update to Rizzference later today, which will include:

  • Removal of SwiftyJSON as a dependency
  • Fix of a bug that would make the word lookup sheet appear on the Favorites tab

There will be a much larger update coming later 😊

Rizzference is an iOS app for looking up modern slang. Stuff like “rizzler”, “gyatt” etc.

It supports Google-like search syntax, and you can put whole sentences in at a time!

@davidbures Nice! A “word of the day” would be neat.

There (?) button does weird things for me. The text in there is mostly cut off and when I dismiss the pop-up the search bar sheet disappears.

Did someone work w/ yet? I assume it is essentially like Android development? Or would you always use sth like Unity and never touch the actual "2D" GUI things? Is there a good introduction article for developers?

nighthawk,

@helge I have no experience myself, but the last paragraph in this article sounds like it’s game engines for now but Meta is working on something more similar to how visionOS works: https://www.roadtovr.com/meta-horizon-store-app-lab-android-spatial/

The Clicks keyboard could be a portrait game controller for Delta. Would “just” need custom keyboard mappings for the various buttons. (Currently it’s unusable due to lack of arrow keys.) Pretty please, @rileytestut. You’d make me and @viticci happy.

With a bit over a month away, it's a good time to start a document with questions about existing frameworks for the one-on-one labs, and create a list of things/radars to test when the first betas drop. It's easy to otherwise forget about those issues and workarounds that have accumulated over the past year in the excitement of the new announcements.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

@sirshannon Fully agree. Seems like a relic of the old in-person format to have labs at the same time as the sessions.

Installed macOS Sonoma beta this weekend to try out the changes to . Can confirm that this lets me add support to @longplay for the Mac. The previous way only worked through Catalyst and caused the Music app to spawn as soon as you start playing, which was hideous, but this now works independently and support AppKit. Woot woot.

Gotta love that the iOS Calendar app correctly displays the first week of October 1582, when the Gregorian calendar was introduced and 10 days were skipped.

nighthawk,
@nighthawk@aus.social avatar

Boo, the iPad Calendar app crashes in the iPad-sized views nowadays when you tap a date around 1582 and October is not showing its proper three-week duration anymore. All this swiping for nothing. (Still fine on iPhone though.)
