my September income (= translation sales) was a bit over half of August income

but that came with me:

  • taking it easy for a couple of days after the summer heat (also read as me playing Baldur's Gate 3)
  • looking after the family after partner got covid around Sep 12
  • looking after youngest who got hand/foot/mouth disease and was mostly eating pudding and yogurt for a few days due to a mouth sore

so, pretty decent all-in-all. Partner also doing better 3 weeks later.

@FlockOfCats I feel still money to be made in high-end finance and legal translation which needs to be correct for legal reasons, but there's MT/AI shills trying to capture work on the low end

@takosix @FlockOfCats I’ve done about 10,000 in a 9-5 workday before, but this was specialised nonsense (patents), there was a reasonable amount of repetition, and we had a fast autocomplete system (fast in terms of keystrokes to get your output)

I wore a mask for the first half of the conference last week, but with Sapporo going through a heat wave, the humidity was pretty high even inside. So… I masked less and less.

Now I have a 39C fever, a developing cough on an over-tight chest, headache and joint pains.

And… my friends… regrets.

Am now splashed on the sofa pondering the irony of getting sick while demonstrating the value of online virtual spaces.

(Covid antigen currently negative, but I guess may not stay that way.)

niten,

@FlockOfCats @DervPerv even if you don't want to write the kanji, I can recommend ちゅうちょ as a word to know as fancy pants authors will often use it instead of ためらう to mean hesitate

any experience or advice on how to translate 炎上する in a social media context?

After something with an analytical/technical nuance rather than slang

"flaming" comes to mind, but "flame war" comes up on weblio as ののしり合戦 / 罵倒戦争 / etc. and suggests that there's not a tight overlap

JP wikipedia has 炎上(えんじょう)とは、インターネット上のコメント欄などにおいて、稚拙な批判や誹謗中傷などを含む投稿が集中することをいう
...
「否定的な意見」の方をより多く包含するものを炎上とし

So closer to "attract significant negative online attention"?

@DervPerv @YamaguchiSake @nosword

niten,
@niten@famichiki.jp avatar

@richardmedh @DervPerv the situation I've got is that there's already a high posting frequency and slander/誹訪中傷, the next step is 炎上, which might be referring to a "pile-on" or the "backlash" / "criticism" (from other parties)

niten,
@niten@famichiki.jp avatar

@richardmedh @DervPerv the wikipedia definition implies other parties are joining in, which escalates the situation from a (presumably) one-on-one argument to a many-on-one situation

The other thought I had was using something like "went viral" (in a negative sense)

niten,
@niten@famichiki.jp avatar

@FlockOfCats @richardmedh @DervPerv I've gone with "suffer a flood of criticism" with a suggestion for "suffer a flood of criticism from other parties"

I like "pile on", but seeing it as being slangy, so avoiding it in my (technical) context

OK, this is super frustrating: In my tiredness last night, I packed the cord for my noise cancelling headphone but not the actual headphones.

My flight is tonight but it’s a 3 hour round trip to pick them up, and I’ve a chunk of work I’d like to get done instead.

Soooooo how annoying will my (long) flight be sans-headphones?

(I do have my AirPods, but they’re not the noise cancelling version.)

@elizabethtasker splash out on a pair at the airport if you find one? I think it's worth it especially if you're tired.
