@cwebber Christine, my lab @medlab is developing a series on civic social media this summer. I would love to do a first webinar on the experience and ideas that informed the design of the fediverse and its ilk, especially centering LGBTQ experience. Would you be up for being a speaker and doing some storytelling?

Also, do you have thoughts about other speakers to include? I was thinking about Rabble on SSB and now Nostr.

Finally got a bsky code. So the raw onboarding UX was not superior to Mastodon for me. Sure there’s a feed because there’s only a single instance but no one I know or care about after some scrolling. And the suggested accounts to follow are all from Japan.

@profcarroll I have gotten better suggestions than that on Bluesky. They'll improve as you follow some folks.

But I find it a strangely lonely place, full of people over-performing for the crowd rather than trying to be good citizens of their instance.

The idea of a default instance is a bug not a feature. I think the solution is to aid discovery of good instances, not pile people into one. Mega instances make social worse for all.

I just really appreciate, first, how the present moment is enabling us to explore different modalities.

I do think that there is a missing middle—the fediverse probably makes people too dependent on a single server/community, while Bluesky and Nostr so far lean harder on atomized individuals. I think that when people experience the right balance of community and liberty, they the dorkiness will align.

@blakereid @bkeegan @profcarroll @shauna But this experience is making me feel how grateful I am to have a nice community here on the fediverse, a friendly lens through which to see the world. That is no small thing. And I'm realizing all the people on mastodon.social are having a totally different kind of experience. I don't blame them for not loving it.

Does anyone use mastodon as an provider? Ideally we would like to allow members of our instance to use their masto account to log in to a and instance rather than having three accounts, but I have never tried doing SSO before and can't really find any examples. help plz? boost welcome

@jonny it seems to me we should aim to have a separate SSO provider in case we ever want to leave mastodon.
