Are issues marked "up for grabs" stuff you would like to see worked on but don't have time? Looking to help, wondering what are some good first issues to look at.

Is someone using an with ?

Is it really so strait forward that you hook up the printer via USB?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@mfraz74 @SebastianM6L Apparently not (easily) possible, comes with its own Kipper based ecosystem: https://community.octoprint.org/t/octoprint-not-detecting-my-3d-printers-usb-connection/53961/6

@octoprint I'm currently running Octoprint on a Pi 3a+, do you think it would be worth upgrading to a 4b?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@andy_warb Unless you desperately need anything the pi4 specifically offers, or run tons of plugins, tbh no, not really.

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@po3mah Hm, I see quite some coming in that way, directly as far as I can see, so I guess it's working in general... What kind of issues did you see?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@goeland86 You keep bringing this up again and again. All I can say is, with OctoPrint I target a different audience than Klipper.

It might well be that manufacturers go there now. They also go to proprietary solutions & lock-in in general. And yes, that might break the neck of OctoPrint long term.

But that's not something I can fight. There still seems to be value seen in OctoPrint, or adoption wouldn't rise. But that adoption currently doesn't transfer. And that's what I hope to pull around

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@goeland86 And if I see my usage numbers twindle and the income with them, to a point where it's no longer sustainable, that will be the message for me to stop.

Because if OctoPrint no longer provides meaningful value, I don't see why I should continue to work on it (it's stressful AF tbh, albeit also fun). So in THAT case I'll know it's time to say goodbye.

But with the current reverse situation? Usage climbing, income falling? That's not Klipper, that's finance crisis and bad communication.

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@goeland86 I know you mean well, and want to help.

It's just that I can only worry about so many things at a time, have a ton of other stuff to keep an eye on as well, all the while of COURSE also thinking about things like that a lot, and trying my best to keep everyone happy, informed, supported etc.

So, you are preaching to the choir, but my day only has 24h, my head only so much space for worries, and at some point I just need to prioritize.

So, that's where the above is coming from 🙂

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@doctormo @mooklepticon I've had an unobstrusive note in the setup wizard for a long time now and as far as I can see it didn't get much attention.

So that will become a bit more visible going forward, but I'll also focus on generating visibility for this after the app has been used a bit, as personally I'd rather donate after I've gotten some use out of a tool rather than right while I'm starting it for the first time, and I could imagine it's similar for others.

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@ironicbadger Absolutely! Avid self hoster myself (though admittedly not a listener so far). And since I just saw what your day job is, it might interest you to know that new OctoPi-UpToDate builds are built on GitHub Actions and then automatically tested on real hardware sitting on my desk, through Tailscale ^^

@ironicbadger best send me an email at gina -at- octoprint -dot- org and we'll take it from there 👍

@octoprint Do you seen any issues with implementing OctoPrint on the new Pi5 when it comes out next week?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@chrishuck OctoPRINT should run fine, especially after jumping through some hoops last week to get a third party dependency issue on Bookworm and piwheels worked around.

OctoPI won't. Got a test pi but the timing on this release was exceptionally bad for me and I simply have not had a chance to test and adapt. So a new image will be some time away. Getting help there from a contributor.

However, a Pi5 for running OctoPrint feels even more like a waste than the Pi4 did.

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@chrishuck Is this a current version of OctoPrint? Slow file list refreshing sounds ominous...

@octoprint Hi, the plugin description for https://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/bedcheckai/ does not mention that it posts images to octoprint.printpal.io (which doesn't seem too surprising), but shouldn't this fact be mentioned at least?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@hn3000 Hey, I agree that it should be mentioned, ideally in both the description and the privacy policy linked by the plugin. Could you please open a ticket in both the plugin's own issue tracker to raise that point there (as it's something the author needs to address) and then also link that in a "Suspicious activity" ticket on the plugin repository tracker at https://github.com/OctoPrint/plugins.octoprint.org/issues/new/choose ?

octoprint,
@octoprint@fosstodon.org avatar

@hn3000 Yes, like that, thank you! We'll keep an eye on things and should the author react, try to change that. But please also keep us in the loop from your end please, thank you!
