For what it’s worth, it doesn’t realistically change much, since Lemmy (software) doesn’t federate with Threads in any meaningful way. There are some benefits, but my understanding is that the benefits are mostly symbolic. This is also why you might see more discussion around Mastodon instances staying federated with Threads, because there are tangible benefits and drawbacks to that decision.
It’s not as simple as “that instance is a traitor”, and attacking other users/admins over this without considering the nuance is silly. For example, lemmy.ca has blocked Threads, but I’m not going to go around attacking others over a decision that’s based on how each of us is predicting the future of the Fediverse to play out.
That’s odd, for me it automatically exports to the specified folder. Just used it the other day and I don’t remember any issues. It works pretty well for something that’s running locally
If anyone wants Canadian content in a "Reddit-like" format, lemmy.ca federates with Mastodon. For example, @manitoba can be followed directly on Mastodon (though it's kind of messy, as both posts and comments show up in the feed as "boosts"). Beyond that, you can simply tag the account in a toot, and it will double as a post to that lemmy community - you'll get the replies, too!
As an idiot currently blundering around in it, I don’t think this is something we can gatekeep, nor can we try and do it. It’s just something that will happen
The great thing about the fediverse is that people have control over which instances they are around, and there will always be some more isolated ones if that’s what you prefer
The federation between mastodon and lemmy is strange. If a M account wants to follow a L community, they need to follow an automated M account which represents the L community. But if any M post mentions that L community, the post will get boosted by the community's M account, so everybody who follows will get a notification. And I'm not sure if this can be moderated from the L side, because it seems like it never goes through L. Such as - do you see this @opensource ? Does a L mod see this?
Oh TRUE, I didn’t consider the spam posts. I’ve been removing what I can but I think that only helps the users on lemmy.ca, otherwise it’s up to the admins of the instance where the Lemmy community is?
Okay hear me out. What if we all chipped in 5 bucks to @firefox? How many people would it take to fund it well enough so they don’t have to do layoffs? I get it, the FOSS community wants the “F” part but we all should contribute some for good infrastructure. And the idea that search engine payments from Google is what keeps Firefox afloat should worry us all. We need browser engine diversity if the web is going to stay open and not littered with walled gardens any more than it already is.
