The big rewrite is making good progress! But it's not ready yet.

Still have some missing features and placeholder UIs. But there are fewer of them with every passing week…

Happy Apple Vision Pro preorder day!

My native app isn’t done yet, but it'll be there when it's ready.

In the meantime, enjoy my iPad app on visionOS, which works well!

This isn't the final design or layout. Half of the buttons don't work. There's still SO much to do.

But the rewrite hit a huge milestone last week: I'm now able to use it myself to listen to my podcasts.

And it's finally starting to feel like home.

@overcastfm Pardon me if this is not the correct method of contact, but I am new to the elephant.
The new ads that recently began popping abruptly in out of nowhere, obviously not part of the original cast or ad breaks, are ruining Overcast. I'll pay a couple of bucks more subscription to get rid of them. Take my money. Or I'll have to go elsewhere.

@Keving58 Sorry, Overcast NEVER inserts audio ads into podcasts — what you're hearing is dynamic ad insertion by the podcast providers themselves, and you'll have that problem in every podcast app.

I understand that these ads are awful, but the place to direct your feedback on that is with each podcaster themselves who choose to include them in their podcasts. It's their choice, not mine.

I hope they survive. Castro has always been my favorite competitor — by FAR the most innovative, and easily the best-designed.

If they do go under, I'll do my best to serve Castro users, but I hope they don’t.

And don't worry about Overcast — it’s healthy and stable, and I'm in the middle of a huge reinvestment in the form of a giant migration to carry the 10-year-old codebase into the next (hopefully) 10+ years!

I swear I'll do the "wrapped" thing next year!

I intended to have it in time for this year, but between family stuff (moving to a new town!) and the giant Swift rewrite, I just couldn't get to it in time.

Stats/history will be a feature of the big rewrite, though. Likely launching in 2024.

@webjac It sounds like the old image is being embedded in the files themselves, either by you or Anchor.

Overcast shows the embedded artwork, if present, during playback on the now-playing screen — but it always shows the feed artwork URL when displaying it in lists.

@karlseamon @gruber It appears to be fixed now. You may need to pull-to-refresh on the Dithering screen in your Overcast app, then redownload it (fastest way is to swipe it over to reveal the left-side actions, then tap the green down-arrow one).

@gruber @overcastfm Dithering is showing Not Authorized on today’s show in Overcast. Tried re-adding from the account page and it added a second podcast subscription in Overcast but still showed Not Authorized on the download.

If you can't download shows on the TWiT network since yesterday, it may be due to an ad-blocking VPN, DNS, or router, such as Eero Plus.

To temporarily alleviate the problem, disable those ad-blocking features, or add this to your allow-list if you have such functionality: twit.cachefly.net

(Ad/tracking-blockers completely break on podcast downloads. Podcast ads don't work the same way as scripts on web pages, and can't be blocked without blocking the audio downloads completely.)

@overcastfm what exactly does the “upload your own files” feature do in Overcast Premium?

Can I publish my own podcast to the public? Store AAC+ files? Keep company PDFs?

I feel like overcast.fm should say but couldn’t find an explanation 🤷

@nutjob4life Sorry, and good question. I'll try to clarify that.

It lets you upload compatible audio files (MP3, AAC) for your own personal listening, not available to others.

People use it for DRM-free audiobooks, ripped YouTube audio, and other long-form audio that wasn't distributed as podcasts; and podcast producers themselves often use it to review draft episodes before publishing them.

Might you have the Overcast iPad app installed on your Mac? That’ll use background downloads for your podcast episodes if configured.
