The UK Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill ("DMCC") has been passed by the Parliament!🇬🇧🇬🇧

This gives the UK regulator the tools they need to fight anti-competitive conduct from the gatekeepers.

Thanks to all those that made it happen!

"What they did not do was make mobile Safari good ... The reason that Apple doesn't allow that to happen, is because the Web is now the most powerful application distribution mechanism that has ever existed and if you bring that to the iPad, the App Store goes away."

In watching talks this week about all that has recently landed or is on the way right now, I don't recall a time when useful features were standardizing and landing in browsers at anything near the speed we're seeing now. So many JS workarounds are being replaced with simple, often elegant declarative alternatives. Great to see

@slightlyoff @scottjehl One of the aims when we started was to ensure Safari got a bigger budget... hopefully with competition it will continue to increase!

Apple essentially demanding that browser vendors relocate their iOS browser development teams to the EU.

The next episode of malicious compliance:

@niutech @meduz For some cases simulator or remote testing would be ok, but there are many cases that you need a real device. Bugs that only appear on real devices, or if your trying to test responsiveness to touch input, or security issues. For practical purposes you need a device on your desk that you can update and test.

owa,
@owa@mastodon.social avatar

@meduz It's not practical in many cases to rely on the simulator for testing. Bugs can occur only on real devices, and it can be really hard to test responsiveness to input on simulators or remote testing.

As far as we know it's quite difficult to get around the geofencing without breaching Apple's terms and conditions.

In a win for browser competition, Apple has been designated with respect to iPadOS under the Digital Markets Act.🇪🇺

Apple now has six months to ensure full compliance of iPadOS with the DMA obligations.⏰

@amxmln hopefully they won’t ever try that again. That was a very stressful month but hopefully the outcome will discourage from trying anything that blatantly anti-competitive and malicious

Installing App Stores on iOS is exclusive to Safari. Apple, the DMA doesn't allow you to make OS features exclusive to your own browser any more.

However it is great to see the first app store competitor on iOS @altstore even if Apple is trying it's best to kill competition by scare screens and the core technology fee.

Q: What effect has Apple's browser ban on iOS had?
A: https://ios404.com/

owa,
@owa@mastodon.social avatar

@coldkennels @alfonsoml which browser does your partner use and on what OS?

The AppStore is very poorly checked. Everything needs to be built in the platform as it’s not possible for 500 people to check 1 million apps per week.

"That certainly feels like Apple making a design choice that just so happens to favor its own app—which is exactly what the DMA is taking aim at."

Making myself happy by stripping out loads of JS and replacing it with declarative markup and modern CSS, which will work in modern (evergreen) browsers, and Safari too.

owa,
@owa@mastodon.social avatar

@cdevroe @brucelawson and a wide variety of bugs affecting the resizing of the visual viewport and scrolling of the page in reaction to onscreen keyboard appearance on iOS.

All of this is because of underfunding for over a decade caused by a lack of competition... OWA will try to fix the competition aspect, which will lead to funding, which will lead to a reliable platform for building apps.
