1. LEGAL with respect to national and international norms
2. NECESSARY to the accomplishment of the mission
3. MINIMAL to obtain the intended effect
4. DISCRIMINATING between combatants and non-combatants

Ukraine has shown us that it is possible to maintain these standards in the direst of circumstances and under actual existential threats. Others would be well inspired to follow that example.

It does not come with Brown Shirts goose-stepping with drums and flags (although I do remember a member of a US Nazi Party who had uploaded a photograph of himself in a litteral SA uniform), but with the increasing acceptance of an ideology comprising

• violence
• populism
• authoritarianism in general, but with emphasis on targeting minorities
• nationalism, though possibly "civilisational" (à la Huntington or Steve Bannon).

Aujourd'hui, la Wikipédia francophone a décidé de montrer de façon proéminente les deadnames de personnes trans dans leurs biographies.

D'aucuns diront que cela fait de WP-FR un projet transphobe, et il difficile d'écarter l'argument : bien que Wikipédia ne soit pas une instutition monolithique, et que l'expression "communauté wikipédienne" me laisse très sceptique, on voit WP-FR de fait contrôlée par des gens hostiles ou indifférents à l'inclusion.

🧵 Je vois pas mal de gens qui réagissent à la crise de Wikipédia-fr en se lançant comme contributeurs. Je trouve ça merveilleux d'une part parce que le projet est fondamentalement un beau projet qui a besoin de se renouveler; et d'autre part parce que dans le contexte actuel, ça témoigne d'un certain courage.

Toutefois, ce n'est pas simplement en contribuant qu'on rétablira la situation : il faut reprendre les instances politiques et disciplinaires aux fachos qui les trustent.

I just referred to this meme as the fundamental thing to understand about Ukraine, and I do believe it is: NATO is a voluntary organisation, respectful of the will of the peoples. That is radically different from the yoke of Russian imperialism..

Now, there is also something seriously incorrect about this image: France actually never left NATO.

It left the integrated military command structure of NATO. Not the Alliance. That is very different.

Un des trucs les plus hallucinants que j'aie vus dans l'histoire du sondage de la honte sur Wikipédia, c'est la façon dont les fachos et leurs alliés construisent un narratif d'utilisateurs légitimes, qui ont voté comme eux, et de "faux" utilisateurs — nouveaux utilisateurs ou "comptes dormants", genre comme des agents infiltrés pendant la Guerre Froide.

Alors que les fachos sont typiquement des apparatchiks qui sont sur Wikipédia pour sa politique interne, et produisent peu de contenu.

Fascism is not something that you need to be a card-carrying Nazi to promote. Many fascist arguments are designed to be superficially compatible with Left-wing opinions, and will appeal to uneducated progressives.

Decoding an argument as being fascist is not the same thing as accusing the utterer of being a literal fascist.

Perceiving the general climate as more and more fascist does not entail seeing Black Shirts under every bed.

And being Left-Wing does not absolve supporting fascism.

The language around Wikipedia is so depoliticised that many commentators are now confused as to what are the core values of the project (build a collaborative encyclopedia for everybody) and what are means to that end (the neutrality of the articles).
This is how you end up with the utterly nonsensical notion of a "politically neutral encyclopedia", which Wikipedia never tried or wanted to be: it is every bit as politically militant as the GNU project is.
