🔖 Wholesome manga rec, the main character reminds me of some people on here

Fushimi-San is a high school janitor. For high schoolers where it seems no adult actually gives them the time of day, Fushimi actually listens and is the role model they need, even if she can be a bit clumsy and laid back at times. Each chapter follows a different students difficulties in their personal life (note: it's not only a fluffy manga, some tough stuff happens too) and the subtle way the janitor ends up being the little nudge towards what they needed. Also the art is super cute!

https://anilist.co/manga/164560

The janitor leans back while holding a trash bag telling a student, "let's both do our best". The student replies "you bet, I'll give it my all!"
The janitor lazily leans against sink station while holding a wash basin. She is wearing a work jumpsuit and chunky sneakers.

Heat wave in the mid-Atlantic next week, with temperatures reaching 80's F and potentially 90's F in some parts of the region (in that high 20+ C range). Make sure to stay hydrated, take a snack with you if you are outside, turn on the A/C if you really need it, and put on sunscreen.

Otherwise, enjoy!
(No, this isn't generally normal April weather)

I started bringing my plants outside because it's nearing last frost. Here's one guy I left outside the whole time through the winter, a prickly pear, cactus already springing with new life.

"How have you been?" is such an odd question from someone you've never spoken to before.

How have I been since when? Since birth? Since the time you sent the message? Since some other randomly allotted time?

@actuallyautistic

@alexisbushnell @actuallyautistic I feel this. I try to ask "what did you do today/this weekend" to make the time line more specific. From identifying what happened, then I might get to a question of how it made them feel... that's how I'd like it to go for myself at least!

repair cafe was a little slow this time around, but still got some good fixes in! I got to replace some components like the wiring, frame, and ball chain of some lamps. the guys taught me lots about tools and what not i never seen or heard of before. a lady came to me with a radio and ipod. the radio was fine, she just didn't know how to turn it on, and the earbuds she was using as an antenna were probably not too great. the ipod was also fine, but she had said it wasn't turning on. i got to open up an ipod for the first time (i have one of my own that i've been putting off doing this on) and didn't see anything wrong. we plugged it in again and it appeared to already be 75% charged, lol.

A3: I currently hoard any materials I think could be used for my houseplants plants. I get my houseplants for free from people giving cuttings or seeds away. Sometimes they don't come with proper basins. So I save every cottage cheese and yogurt container, many take out containers and toilet paper rolls, coffee cups and lids, etc. I never know what else I could cleverly reimagine and build them into! I have one area I keep this all in, but once I have too much of an item I know I have to back off haha

I used to hoard more things but I had to move in the past year and lots of those miscellaneous "strings I might one day have a use for" did not make it on the journey

I also have quite a miscellany of things for embedded circuits and what not

A1: this weekend Etta (https://ettasandry.com/Work) taught a workshop teaching us how to make drafting patterns in a zine she designed. Essentially we create a bitmap and execute it physically. We cut paper looms and used stamps to dictate our design. Various paper scrap was used to fill in the spaces. Etta was still work shopping this workshop and the zine design so it was lovely to be a part of this process. At the time, I was feeling very computer bad, so it was nice to do something hands on.

I just got my third flat tire in the past six months. Am I cursed?

I don't know if it can be patched or not. I won't be able to check in until Thursday

A friend helped me change the tire but god I'm a mess

Mutual aid appreciated rn

I literally didn't even drive anywhere special, just to my local library which I drive to plenty of times

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

Ok I drive an old car and it's possible that the rim could be fucked up. I mean it could be a lot of things fucked up but I REALLY dont want to have to worry about major car repair beyond a flat replacement right now.

I just cleared my calendar for tomorrow including the tree planting event and four different people I was going to see while in town because I don't feel secure right now driving around too much on the spare

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

Good news: it's not my car's frame
Bad news: I still need to buy a full new tire, it's not patchable

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

More bad news for me! Yay!

Turns out I have yet another tire that needs to be replaced, plus two sensors that need to be replaced. The reason for damage is still unknown to me.

I'm looking at $600 (2 tires, 2 sensors). I already spent $450 on the last two flats I got 4 and 6 months ago (all unrelated places and causes). I drive an old fiat model with a specific tire size that is just as costly as buying it elsewhere and shaving it down, so I don't have other options.

Mutual aid seriously appreciated... PayPal, Librapay, and Venmo also under pixouls

Why I seek to create spaces to talk about the future...
Without centering AI
Without centering white supremacy
Without centering capitalism

Because those framings that "it is here and there for all our futures must go with it" erases lived experience of those who continue to be actively marginalized by it

It's necessary to offer dialectal framing to what is dominant. Alternative spaces aren't always about avoidance and ignorance. It is about critiquing who benefits from these framings being seen as the new "normal" and harm being "inevitable". I do not feel hopeful there.

It is about finding the language and tools to enact the resistance and ensure accountability can occur in the broadest and most speculative and loving ways. This is my hope.

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

Being tolerant and open minded at times where these dialogues are centered and being willing to have my believes challenged does not mean it does not take emotional labor to do so

And again and again we must ask which groups must do a disproportionate amount of labor to "meet half way" in spaces where policies and practices are designed to protect the status quo from harm.

Don't have the time to get into them right now but hopefully will in the coming days?

The common experience of imposter syndrome for me is being of a low-income immigrant background in a predominantly white institution with students from upper class backgrounds among the top global percent of wealth.

Imposter syndrome is the tension of cultural capital held by those who know and benefit from the structure of the institution to fail people like me

I do think in many other places this framing can come into play, that imposter syndrome is a symptom of a base of knowledge offering an elite status and taken for granted.

But I am proud of who I come from and I know there is a legitimacy to the work I do regardless of whether that is affirmed by the institution.

This does only come about because of the support of community to reinforces and makes space for that.

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

Imposter syndrome can also be met with a question of Degrowth

As an imposter in what direction am I feeling pressured to grow?

As an imposter, what parts of my ways growth that have legitimately occurred outside the accreditation system are being treated as inadequate? (In lieu of stifling the agenda of the system)

As an imposter, how can my ways of growth continue to be subserving and challenge the systems that demand growth at the cost of myself or my community?
