Redrew my light switch labels. Created because some of them are in an order that doesn't make sense relative to where stuff is oriented in the room.

A frog between the kitchen and bookcase light switches
Some mushrooms between the living room outlet and light switches
A mirror between the bathroom light switches

The Background Music Experiment (1/?)

I've been playing around with having music that always plays in the background out loud. I tend to accidentally sit in silence a lot. I also sometimes use my phone to play audio that isn't music, where I wouldn't mind music continuing to play in the background, or may forget to turn the music back on. Ideally, I want to be able to listen to nature sounds to better foster a connection with nature when I'm indoors. However, other sounds could be fine so long as they're not too distracting. If I'm already using Spotify, where I do have a lot of curated playlists, to listen to something else, like a podcast, there's not really an option to put that on in the background. I think sounds and smells are some underrated ways to curate a space beyond visual things like paintings. Sitting in silence sometimes makes me feel like I'm punishing myself when I don't mean to.

The Background Music Experiment (2/?)

The first iteration was an offhanded decision to play sounds from https://www.tree.fm/ which allows you to listen to forests from around the world. It checks the boxes of nature audio and is free to use. However, there's no autoplay, so I end up listening to the same 40 seconds on loop depending on the field recording. Another tricky part is that I can find repetitive sounds really irritating. It did not seem like I would stick with this option. It is a cool site if you're just looking for cool tiny sites. It's not exactly a radio though.

The Background Music Experiment (3/?)

But no worries right... I have a lot of internet radios bookmarked, so hopefully I could find something else. https://www.are.na/pixel-oliver/internet-radio-stations

For my second iteration I went to https://earth.fm. Similar to https://tree.fm, it has a lot of field recordings, though not limited to those just of forests. They also have curated playlists of recordings. This actually turned out to be really good to play in the background of my solarpunk workshops. I set up my iPad to play audio separate from my phone but also not on my laptop which I don't want to leave on all the time. I hooked it up to a secondary bluetooth speaker I have that's more about aesthetics than sound since I'm not as picky about quality for background music. However, for some reason, the earth.fm autoplay does not work on the mobile web version on my iPad. It works fine on desktop (and maybe my phone, i forget). I emailed support who told me to keep an eye out for the mobile native app that will be released... soon?

The Background Music Experiment (4/?)

For my third iteration, I decided to look online for some suggestions on background sounds. I'm not looking for ambient noise generators which were the majority of recommendations. I'm not exactly looking to pretend I'm at the beach or in a coffeeshop. I found someone who created a native iOS app for Lo-Fi music and also saw that poolside.fm made an app. I've come across the latter before. However, poolside fm's creators are involved in shady web3 stuff. I found that their playlists were too limited for my tastes and too distracting for background music. the "Cosmic lo-fi" radio was nice to use for a bit. A few days later though, I'm able to recognize the tracks and once again they're grating on my brain. In the past, I haven't been a huge fan of Lo-Fi music. It was fun to experiment with, but needs more variety in order for me to settle for it. Many lo-fi producers also tend to cater to problematic orientalist views of using Asian cultures as aesthetics which makes me super uncomfortable.

The Background Music Experiment (5/?)

For my fourth iteration, I decided to go another route. What about live DJ's on Twitch? While there aren't that many "goth radios" around these days, there are many people doing live sets on Twitch, including within the darkwave genre. It might not have the natural sounds of field recordings or the inherent coziness of Lo-Fi, but it does ring to another type of genre of music I like and help create a feeling of being more in my goblin lair. Some downsides include some of the ads on Twitch and sometimes getting jump scared by the commentary a DJ will provide. I also need to remember to hop on another stream once one streamer ends.

For now this is the route that I'll experiment for the next few days. Otherwise, I'll likely take another look at my various internet radios, or other options for listening to nature recordings continuously from my iPad.

Reading threads about morning routine advice on Reddit and just like... if work or school or whatever wasn't a thing... what would our lives actually look like in the mornings? What if we didn't have to push ourselves the moment we wake up with silly little tricks to make our brains ready to be productive and not filled with dread?

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

Even threads within disability communities are like "here's how I engage in hand to hand combat with my disability every morning so I can go to work" and it's just upsetting that we must fight this fight instead of having a world that accommodates for our needs

a friend told me about two sweet rituals i thought i'd share w u all:

  • every day, go out or open the window where u live, and hang out there for a bit until you hear/see a bird. maybe some days u only hear them, or u end up seeing a squirrel or smth. the idea is that if you bring yourself to be present in a place u think u know well, unexpected things will happen!
  • take more things spontaneously and sometimes arbitrarily to be good omens (see a cool cloud = good omen, leaf fell near u = good omen). this is a practice to both resist the tendency to fixate on things being bad omens (tripping, messin up at work over small things) and shift the idea that the environment is working against u, rather for u

what's your honest opinion about how often to go into a car wash for a beat-up used car?

wondering if I should start budgeting for it more often. a lot of car washes also seem to have a monthly subscription model. that could add up to a lot at the end of the year.

if i washed it by hand, since i live in a complex, I'd need something that works rinseless, as I don't have access to a hose. but i don't have access to a car vacuum at the moment. maybe if i asked around?

edit: i'm in the northeast, so a decent amount of salt for the snow generally? I've never really paid attention to it tbh...

pixouls,
@pixouls@post.lurk.org avatar

I asked two coworkers today. One said he washes it every week and the other said she washes it only before her dad services it for her, every few months

Based on that and the responses I got from this post, it seems like I should definitely be doing it more in the winter due to the salt, and maybe less frequently in the warmer months.

> The March full moon is called the Worm Moon in the Old Farmer's Almanac, supposedly because of the emergence of earthworms. North American Native peoples had other names for it, often differing widely. According to the Ontario Native Literacy Project, the Ojibwe (or Anishinaabe) peoples called it the Sugar Moon, as it was when maple tree sap was harvested; this lunation also happens to mark the Anishinaabe new year. Meanwhile, the Tlingit, whose traditional territory stretches along the coast of what is now western Canada and Alaska, called the March lunation Héentáanáx Kayaan’i Dís or "Underwater plants sprout," according to the Tlingit Moon and Tide Teaching Resource published by the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.
