My current list of Very Cool Job Titles is:
The Shadow Chancellor
Red One
The Accession Council

I was going to add "The Treasury Devil" to this list (after reading https://mastodon.social/@davidallengreen@mastodon.green/110468127661981753), the government's most senior external legal adviser, but disappointingly that's just a nickname and they're really called the much less cool First Treasury Counsel.

@sil Seeing that I'm designing a new D&D campaign ...

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@sil Pay spies - such as the player characters. The shadow paymaster general is not the big boss, no, but will have personal knowledge of the big boss - of one of the many sides and factions.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@sil Quite possible. 'The shadow government' is the opposition, sure, but it's also quite undead...

Last campaign was very undead-themed, though, so I'll keep them more in the background this time.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@sil They paid the paymaster general with their shadow. But for what? Power? Money?

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@sil Clearly your shadow paymaster general is part of an already-established story.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@sil OK. I was more thinking like: One morning the shadow monk finds out his shadow is missing. What happened? Who has it?

I'm gonna use this tool where no ones in charge, I don't pay for anything, and there are no real restrictions on how it's used.

Things happen that I don't like

no one could've seen this coming.

@polotek Knowing tech people, someone (or several someones) will make themselves responsible for spam fighting - at least for a while.

If that happens the rest of us should PAY them MONEY to do this vital job or they'll burn out.

If companies fight spam for us for FREE, we're still a product, just one that happens to have to remain spam-free.

Instead, let's stand AND PAY up for ourselves.

Babe, are you ok? You’ve barely touched your container queries

@matthiasott Container queries are the broccoli of CSS?

Hm, scrolling on LinkedIn caused a page crash in Chrome. A long time ago since I've seen one of those.

@bartnv Coil was more like a proof of concept. Question: Are people interested in Web Monetization as a system? The answer appears to be Yes, and that's great!

But Coil worked with "donations" that you gave to them and they gave to website owners because Coil wasn't recognised as a bank or bank-adjacent entity, and thus had no right to touch your money.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@bartnv It was solving this particular problem that took us years - regulatory authorities aren't what anyone would call quick.

But now we have wallets that are recognised as bank-like thingies in some countries, and we can start running real Web Monetization - as soon as the last kinks are worked out of the browser extension.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@bartnv Haha, I see this only now. You're right that the ILF combines radical openness with confused communication - though we hope to improve the latter. I'm going to share your comment internally.

Six hours on this boring boat, my eyes smarting at the frankly vulgar showiness of the ocean blue and ridiculously flamboyant flowers

Some daft flowers, all seemingly from the same plant but different colours, in a pathetic act of horticultural "look at me" desperation

Preferably not in German-speaking countries; we already have those.

Schedule for CSS Day 2024 is up. Even the speaker don't know yet, so this is, like, a total scoop.

(And we're sold out; no more tickets available.)

I like the web monetisation proposal being brought forward by @ppk:

  • Beloved sites get sold and dropped or "eaten by AI", and the reason is money.
  • For those willing, a trickling micro payment stream could send a few cents every few seconds from a reader's wallet to that of a website owner.
  • The readers would control their max rate and max outlay per month, for example.
  • The readers could block certain sites/domains from receiving money.
  • There are still lots of open questions!

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle @sarajw The visibilitychange event is our friend.

However, that event only fires if every single pixel of the page is covered or otherwise invisible.

So the use case where the tab is not entirely hidden is a lot more difficult. In the end it's likely going to be a timeout: if the user hasn't interacted for X time the monetization stream is stopped.

ppk,
@ppk@front-end.social avatar

@michelle @sarajw Once the system actually works I won't stop talking about it and you'll eventually have to mute me.

Preparing for my sponsored 30 minute lunch session about at at 13:00.

It's actually going to be the first time in nearly seven years that I present something at a conference.
