Child the Middlest, 17 full years of age and a reasonably trustworthy young adult, texts Beth and me saying, "I want to go to an all ages rave in SF with Friendo tomorrow night."
They quickly added, “Its at the dna lounge in sf and Friendo’s dad would take us [...] its a really reputable venue ... starts at 7pm, prob get there closer to 9 and leave at midnight,” closing with, “like theyre very strict on no drugs or alcohol at these”
So CtM braces me in person and asks what I think, and is super emphasizing the “no drugs or alcohol part.” We’ll ignore that by their age I’ve been passed-out drunk in a college dorm room (summer geek camp, we couldn’t hold our liquor for beans).
We’ve said yes to ska shows in the city before, so they’re also working that angle. They’re smart and a good negotiator (and look out, World, you don’t know what’s coming for you ...)
So I explained that while I’d never been deep in the scene I was no stranger, and that @jwz is someone I’ve followed for decades because he’s smart and does cool stuff, which was news to them. And then it dawned on them, so they asked, “Have you been to a rave?!”
“Once or twice. It was the 90s.” Wow, did the questions start flying. 😆
It was nice to get to talk about it with them, tho, and share that my concerns are more around the intensity of some of the folks in the scene back when, and that I have no idea how things are now.
So, wonderful folks of Mastoland (esp. y’all more connected with rave culture these days), would you send your reasonably responsible (but sometimes a bit naive) 17 year old non-binary/genderqueer kid to So Stoked Harder Summer? Do I have reasons to worry?
I'm going to demystify Black hair for those who don't understand. Hair is hair. The amount of curl is the only difference. Straight hair is oily because natural scalp oil can slide down it. Curly hair is dry because the scalp oil gets trapped in the curl.
Suggestions for an Evernote replacement? I held on as long as I could, but the latest version has such a shockingly poor UX that I feel now is the time to migrate. #TIA
The computer serving jwz.org, dnalounge.com, mcom.com and others has been replaced. Please let me know if you experience any weirdness. The old one was CentOS 7 on r5a.xlarge (x86 AMD EPYC 7000, 4 CPU, 32 GB, 10 Gbps) and the new one... https://jwz.org/b/ykA9
@jwz re: apache modules, I idly wonder if leaving a zero byte file with the right name prevents upgrade revenant syndrome? Probably not, but might be interesting to try.

OTHER PEOPLE: we should have kids, who will come of age 20 years from now; they're gonna love it!
ME: what the /FUCK/
@bitprophet@dgouldin certainly possible, and I'm with you both that kids vs. no kids is a personal choice that I'd never tell someone how to make, and that our current issues have little to do with population size and more to do with making choices now based on what we think was true then (for us) and what we think is true now (also for us) vs. what was actually true then, and is now, for everyone.
@bitprophet@dgouldin ... with all that said, for us it's really straightforward:
It takes people to make the world better, and it's more than one lifetime's effort to do so.
So we're raising kids who value happiness, kindness, and justice and understand that those things don't occur naturally ... you have to make a bit of each every day. ❤️
@bitprophet@dgouldin and I'm fully biased — we wanted kids and we love them and who they've become at 20, 17, and 12 — so maybe this is just me rationalizing.
Just got to a pop culture reference innocently, yet also blatantly, embedded in #GideonTheNinth and I can't decide if I'm in awe, or super mad. Also, wheezing 🤣
What is everybody using as their link organizing app? Asking because I use Evernote basically for creating archives of links for research that I'm doing. And now Evernote is going away ...
I’m pretty open to Instagram joining the Fediverse. That’s a clear signal that ActivityPub is gaining traction. People need easy on-ramps and the incumbents can definitely help with that while everyone retains optionality via open protocols.
@bhaggs Agree. The narratives lately remind me of the time that geeks cringed as AOL brought the internet to the mainstream. GTFOverIt ... it's either better with more people and more perspectives or it wasn't very good to begin with.</smol-rant>
