Well! In macOS 14.0, it calls startAnimation, but never calls stopAnimation, or kills the process.
So once a screen saver has launched, it just keeps running forever in the background on a now-invisible window. A top-level window with both 'visible' and 'onActiveSpace' being true.
Wow, the non-profit I've been helping gave me access to their #Hostgator billing portal and oh my...
They've been getting billed an extra $110-120 a year on top of a high hosting cost for services that aren't even turned on. If they were turned on, they wouldn't be helping them anyway. 🤦♂️
@major I had a similar experience auditing an organization's GoDaddy charges. Presented an A/B choice of migrate elsewhere or stay and negotiate. Got about a $3k credit for a couple of years' worth of overcharges.
Perceived scarcity is a hell of a thing. If I make one box of Mac and cheese, it’s inhaled instantly by the kids who then get mad at whoever dished themselves the last bits. If I make two boxes, it is barely eaten and without conflicts between the kids, most of it going to waste.
@lkanies@whack our tactic was to teach them to cook and offer that they can make the second box if they're still hungry. The Hunger/Effort Utility Metric seems to sort things out. It was hit-or-miss when they were 3, 7, and 10, but 5, 9, and 12 got us two cooks and an excellent wheedler.
@lkanies@whack Fast forward and the Sam (20) made chicken curry from scratch for his 6 roommates last weekend, Ash (17) made from-scratch minestrone yesterday, and Alli (13) has three basic meals solidly at their command.
@whack@lkanies I feel you. That takes a lot of time and support. Hell, I'm still nervous around the oven, but that's just because it's evil and is trying to kill me.
@whack@freeformz@lkanies ... so true. Learned to make an excellent pasta quattro formaggi and I still jones for Kraft M&C from time to time. Can't expect more from the kids.
is there a single book that you would credit with teaching you to program (in the sense that you could not write programs before you read it, and after you read it you were on your way)? if so, what was it?
After trying out a John le Carré spy novel and realizing it wasn't my style, I'm taking the recommendation of a neighbor and reading Stephen King's "The Gunslinger". 📚
Stayed up entirely too late last night digging into old SF Bay Area transit maps, photos, and videos–a pastime of mine. This is a great then and now type segment from 1984. https://youtu.be/ObOLGzSnNHI
