I'm helping a friend diagnose some strange behavior with her new gaming rig, and I can't help but wonder how many low hit rate post launch mystery crashes are just defective memory or overclocked hardware. She's got gigabyte GPU that's overclocked out of the box, random stuff is crashing when its at load, and it seems to also be interfering with bluetooth lol.

edit for the curious: de-overclocking her GPU fixed the problem

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@aeva so many :( there's a lot of noise in our crash report server, that's for sure.
Also, if this is a new pc there are some problems with 13th and 14th gen Intels in certain motherboards. (Sorry for the unsolicited advice, but we've been dealing with this a lot at work). Seems to mostly manifest as random bluescreens on heavy CPU load, or weirdly as vram out of memory errors when that's clearly not true. Though also just other random crashes. So far our only solution is to underclock the CPU to get around this.

I really don't know how engine programmers have side projects on top of their normal day job. I struggle so much to quiet down my brain and relax even after 2 days off. Only feel like I've sort of managed it just now after 2 alcoholic drinks, which is not exactly healthy.

Do the side projects soak up the extra mental energy or something? Is that how it works? I feel like I'd just work myself up even more thinking about those on top of what was already spinning in my head from my regular job..

Huge congrats to my colleagues for shipping Horizon Forbidden West on pc today!
I helped out a tiny bit to help clear out the bug list, but it was nothing compared to all the awesome work they did to provide a smooth experience for the players ❤️

Holy shit, Mighty Koi is working on a Thorgal game?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6aYAhN2I1M

"Thorgal is an adventure action game with RPG elements, set in the world of popular comics created by Grzegorz Rosiński and Jean Van Hamme. Based on a classic, well-known tale cherished by fans, the fantasy storyline aims to provide a modern and engaging adaptation."

@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@pervognsen @asmodai oh that would be awesome. Asterix and Obelix too, while we're at it. Though maybe a different genre for that one, hmm.

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@asmodai @pervognsen oh that looks pretty good actually!

I received this in an e-mail, and it made me wonder if anyone actually has the last name 'undefined'.

Imagine support looking through your account and saying: "Wait, I think the database is having an issue..."

You: "Nope, we are Mr undefined and Mrs undefined née Null-Pointer'

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@RYStorm I had a science teacher who legally changed his name to
Firstname: Of The Above
Surname: None

And then ran for local elections where they list you on the ballot by surname first.

72 hours with the heat pump now. House is so WARM. We haven’t even insulated the ceilings in the new extensions but it’s already keeping us warm. Outdoor temp between -1C and 7C, CoP already at 3x. Pretty happy with that. It’s only going to get better when we get the remaining insulation in place too.

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@neilhenning oh that's so awesome. We were advised not to get one in our place because they thought it wouldn't keep us warm enough, due to the lack of insulation in the building (and sadly unable to add more insulation due to the building age/construction). But your results are making me doubt that advice we received..

Went for long walkies around all the quieter parts of the park nearby. Then came home, made a cup of tea, cut up an apple with some cinnamon, and sitting next to my snoring cat. Not a bad day off.

Ok, having a junior to mentor is really the best way to make you realise how much stuff you do actually know.

I originally created my Microsoft online account (apparently for Xbox Live) when I lived in Korea in the mid 2000s and have inadvertently had my "display language" for account-related emails, etc, set to Korean since then even though I've changed a bunch of language-related account settings over the years to no avail. Just tried changing it again and I'm curious if it actually does the trick now.

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@pervognsen my windows install is stubbornly in Dutch for a bunch of system messages despite having English as my only set language :(
Haven't found whatever deeper setting it's grabbing that from.

Good Times For The Kiddos Movie Playlist:

  1. Pinocchio (any adaptation really), because who doesn't love a kid getting extremely disproportionately punished for lying
  2. Coraline
  3. Watership Down (pretty much all of it)
  4. The scenes involving the Nothing in Never-Ending story (especially That One Scene. you know the one)
  5. The Last Unicorn
  6. The outbreak containment scene in E.T.
  7. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, any scene with the villain in their true form really
  8. Watership Down again

@pervognsen @andrewwillmott @rygorous omg what, I don't remember that lyric at all!

@pervognsen @andrewwillmott @rygorous ok so they apparently completely changed the song after this, this is the version I remember:

New video from Laura: the billion dollar decision that launched XNA, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJY8RhPHmUQ

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

@dotstdy @pervognsen I think XNA is why I'm now in the industry. Some classmates and I devoured all the learning materials available for it at the time and made a game with it for the 360 as our final year project. It was terrible, but we impressed some local businessmen enough to fund us a tiny bit to start a studio.
I have very fond memories of XNA, I think it was a wonderful tool to ease n00b programmers into game development. And even engine development, eventually. Everything since then has been either too high or too low level, IMO.

Ah I'm going to miss this Matildas team. I saw a bunch of them play in 2012 against NZ in a friendly in my home town. Foord would have been only 17 at the time, but got a lot of cheers from her hometown crowd.
They've achieved so much for women's football in Australia, it brings proud, happy tears to my eyes.

rfernandez,
@rfernandez@aus.social avatar

The last match being the highest viewed television in Australian history, the roar of the crowd every time one of our players even touches the ball, the girls and even grown men wearing yellow ribbons in their hair (or beards) to show support for Raso. It's just phenomenal. I really hope it translates into more support for both youth and adult female sports.

C'mon Matildas! Let's do this!
And let's hope I'm allowed into a pub here in England whilst dressed like this

Apparently it's international cat day today. I was woken up this morning by this fuzzy little furnace who had carefully snuggled her body into the contour of my neck where it met the blanket.
This photo is a great example of her "resting surprised pikachu" face. I love her a lot ❤️

Got back to the AirBnb and the host is having kittens because there's been a snake hanging around today. Just a diamond python, so I calmly start poking my head around to see if I can find it.
The very northern Irish AirBnb host starts laughing at my immediate, very Australian reaction compared to her terrified one.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a PC game that is comfortable to play only with a laptop touchpad & keyboard? (Or only keyboard, I suppose).
Last time I was home I played Disco Elysium, which was perfect. Not sure what to go for this time. Crusader Kings doesn't quite work without an actual mouse..

Finally got out for a walk in the bush today, and came across this old car that is slowly being reclaimed by the rainforest. Oddly pretty.
