In this case, it would be better to repeat "women" rather than use, er, "weaker sex."

In academic papers, author initials are used for various purposes, like stating acknowledgements or COI, so I often have to help authors deal with the case where authors have overlapping initials.

I’d be interested to solve the following problem:

Given the frequency of each letter at the start of given names and surnames, how many authors must be listed to give a 50% probability that 2 of them will have the same initials.

I feel like the number is much smaller in Japanese than in English 🤔

My wife used the word トリセツ to talk about our toddler. It's an abbreviation of 取扱説明書（とりあつかいせつめいしょ） or "user's manual." But can also be applied to how to handle people, such as celebs (and small children).

My J-E translation tips/pet peeves:

Not always, but often:

• Use less “not only, but also”?
• Can you drop“it can be considered”?
• “Understand” or “ascertain” > “grasp”
• Does 各 really mean “each” and not “various” or “individual”?
• “Japan”, not “our country”
• Is ~にくい really “difficult” or is it “impossible”/“infeasible”?
• no tildes in titles
• ignore 一方 at start of paragraph (the new paragraph is the transition!)
• italics, not scare quotes
• papers have sections, not chapters

Japan: In the Edo period, people used to have this tradition on 〇月〇日, and people still do it on the same day today.

Me: Actually it's not the same day, because the whole calendar has changed!

☝️This is the kind of thing that often goes through my head when I'm translating about traditions. I know, I know, it's a cultural difference - I just have to accept it.

This was a good collection. I really enjoyed the opportunity to read across a wide range of Korean writers, and get different views on the country in the past century or so. Recommended.
