Windows Update error 0x80070643!

So Patch Tuesday is causing a nuisance for many PCs. All because the Windows recovery partition is too small. You can enlarge it (details here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5028997-instructions-to-manually-resize-your-partition-to-install-the-winre-update-400faa27-9343-461c-ada9-24c8229763bf) or just wait for MS to come up with a better fix.

    Stupid typo I've made like 7 times today. std::vectory instead of std::vector. No idea why, but almost every time, without fail.

    I started getting some strange RSI symptoms in my right shoulder, so I picked up Kensington Orbit to use with my left hand, while giving my right hand a mouse break. I particularly appreciate the scroll ring. I use it with the wrist rest attached (not pictured here).

    I feel like a trackball mouse would give me RSI in my thumb...? So I'm sticking with an Anker vertical mouse for my right hand.

    It felt odd for a while, having a controller either side of the keyboard, but now I barely notice that I'm switching between the two.

    I’ve never worked a job where I have to wake up at a specific time and I’ve always wondered if it’s professionally acceptable to just be honest and tell someone their 9am meeting suggestion is too early. Currently I just tell everyone my schedule is book every day until 10 am (which is technically true because I have 2am - 9am scheduled for sleeping and 9am - 10am scheduled for drinking coffee and processing being alive).

    robpomeroy,

    Pretty sure you've earned the right not to have to justify your hours. 👍🏻

    I cannae draw.

    It's always bothered me that I can't draw. I have dyspraxia pretty bad and was the crappiest artist in my whole year at school, and I kinda shrugged and went "Guess I'll write instead" and just sort of bimbled through life making text adventures and fixing coin-ops, but it's always nagged at me that I can't draw, and my kid's been asking me "Dad how do you draw a cat" and I'm like "You're six and you already draw better than me," and I'm 40 now and wanna put some time in this year towards not sucking quite so much at this.

    Anyone got a rec for a good absolute-beginner guide? Like, sub-beginner even, think Small Child Level because I wasn't kidding when I said my 6-year-old draws better than me

    Yes. Ditto, in so many respects. Try DrawABox - the lessons are pretty good: https://drawabox.com/

    Just a reminder to anyone putting hard-coded ‘FQDNs’ in their code:

    An FQDN must 👏 resolve 👏 to 👏 its 👏 root.

    And this is NOT the same internally and externally. Especially on complex enterprise networks.

    I can’t tell you the number of times your network engineers or technicians will have had to cover your asses with forwarders or lookup zones.

    Be kind. Terminate your FQDNs fully!

    Updates on fedia.io and Infosec.pub:

    Fedia:
    Images should be fully working now

    There are some federation issues, however many of those are due to steps other instances took to prevent overload

    An unknown number of issues are likely related to the server being overloaded.

    I am going to attempt replacing the single server with 4 nodes of the same spec using the docker swarm capability. I’ve never used swarm, so this should be exciting

    A ridiculous number of people are bit by missing the verification email which expires after an hour. If this happens to you, drop me an email or a message here with the username you tried registering.

    Fedia.io has nearly 2700 accounts active in the past few days.

    Infosec.pub
    I fixed the issue with logins. The problem was that many accounts weren’t actually verified, including mine. My hypothesis is that the default setting doesn’t require email verification and so users created while email verification is disabled are not able to login once email verification is enabled. I manually updated the affected user records and all seems to be good.

    There is an issue with replying to mastodon posts from Infosec.pub. I don’t yet know what the issue is and I don’t see any open tickets referencing the problem.

    Infosec. Pub has 167 active users.

    robpomeroy,

    @jerry

    I could dig out an Ansible playbook for provisioning Docker + Swarm across multiple nodes, if that's any help. The playbook is based on Photon OS (for insanely lean efficiency) but could be adapted to others...

    Almost getting to the point where I'm going to buy a cheap Android phone just to run my banking apps!

    I totally get why they detect root & unlocked bootloaders - the risk is just too high for them. But it sucks that I can't keep using a perfectly good older device without jumping through lots of hoops.

    robpomeroy,

    @Edent

    Makes sense, though a cheap Android phone is going to be out of support pretty quickly (and thus fall out of PCI DSS and/or Cyper Essentials certifications). So you might have to replace it every 18 months?

    A 12-month old secondhand Pixel or Samasung Galaxy might be more cost-effective (with circa 3 years of support remaining). Let someone else pay for the first year's depreciation. 😀

    robpomeroy,

    @Edent

    Am I right in thinking an unlocked bootloader invalidates the secure boot chain guarantee?
