holy shit. they actually called it "reply guy". seeing the Torment Nexus and copying it for profit is one thing, but seeing a reply guy and being like "I can monetize that" is a whole new type of evil.

Apple's top specification apple computer costs $12K. With a payment plan, that's less than
rent.

I propose the new company motto:

Apple, still better than your landlord 🤷‍♀️

welp, getting fedora up and running on there was a breeze. It seems to work perfectly. With the custom kernel the hardware works 100%.

Keyboard attaches -> keyboard works; keyboard detatches -> tablet mode (with auto-rotate); full touch controls; pen works and is beautiful to use in krita; close the keyboard cover and it sleeps instantly; open the keyboard cover and it wakes instantly.

Only issue (which I knew going in) is that the battery life on this thing sucks. It's like 3-5 hours screen on time. I'm mostly going to use it in places where I can plug it in, and I'm doing some testing of drain while suspended.

Otherwise, would recommend the Surface Pro 6 as a cheap linux tablet.

wow, wweek was never super left leaning, but I didn't expect them to take such a hard right turn in the past few years.

Today they have an article that argues should abolish the bottle deposit bill because it's a way for poor people and those suffering from drug addiction to get money. The article is very concerned that a drug addict may be able to get $5 a day by recycling.

OK, I did too much research, and I think this might actually make a fun video or stream.

There is no published information online on if it is actually possible to reset the R52 BIOS password. Some claim it's impossible. :lmao_raccoon: with a physical attack, of course it is possible.

There appears to be some hacking group that made shifty tools to do it in old forum posts, but some say they are scammers and others say the people accusing them are scammers who are jealous, because the hacking group won't sell the tools to them. (cont)

I watch a lot of electronics project videos, and I'm always surprised by the amount of flux people use. I think when I learned we had flux core solder for the most part, though we did sparingly use a tiny dot of flux here and there (especially when fixing bridges).

A ton of the videos just soak the entire PCB in flux, and I don't get it. Did I learn learn the wrong way? Did techniques change?

I'm going to toss my 2 cents in the linux suggestion fountain:

If you are moving to linux for the first time, my current recommendation is a Fedora Atomic Desktop spin from ublue. They do updates for you automatically, have great hardware support, and they are really hard to break.

If you want a more Windows like interface: https://getaurora.dev/

If you want a more Mac like interface: https://projectbluefin.io/

If you want it for a gaming system: https://bazzite.gg/

I think we might finally get movement on seriously addressing plastic waste.

They found microplastics in human testes. They disrupt endocrine receptors and reduce sperm count.

I'm not a fan of cis people asking for people to introduce themselves with pronouns at the start of meetings. It's not that this practice is bad, but because the cis facilitators who do this don't back it up.

You have a responsibility as a facilitator, if you request pronouns, to call other cis people out if they weaponize this to be hateful/dismissive.

Something I've been loving on the Steam Deck is CRPGs. Some of the newer ones (like Disco Elysium) have controller support, but many of the classics don't.

Right now, I'm playing Knights of the Old Republic, and it 's fine with the Steam Deck's touchpad and a few mapped keyboard buttons.

When I see things like, "Steam Deck doesn't support all games unlike the <random Windows handheld> supports everything", or "the trackpads are useless", I just don't understand how I could play things like KotOR on any other handheld.

@rose@503junk.house avatar

why do the keep releasing gaming handheld PCs with Windows? The Steam Deck proved out that it's a poor option, and that you can make a custom linux OS that's way better. But they just keep releasing with Windows and spending all of the dev team trying to hack on bad Windows apps to make it kind of usable (maybe).

This is very particular to the US, and might not make sense in a global framing.

I've been organizing with my union for about a few years, and an official capacity for about six months. For all the things that hold more mainstream labor union back I do definitely see radicalization potential that I don't see in a lot of other organizing. For example, I don't think organizing within the Democratic party (a la the DSA) or even umbrella "left" coalition groups. A small group of radicals in a mainstream labor union could shift power and stances at at least a state level if not nationally.

I'm not the type that believes in a state compromised of labor syndicates, but with how lines are drawn in US politics, I think labor organizing might make a lot more sense for many. Which is more likely to happen: your local DSA member gains political power sufficient to make lasting change, the rainbow coalition usurps power, or the decision makers in labor power are switched such that they are primed for things like general strikes?
