: looking for a PC. Mostly for headless home server—Linux w/containers. Currently using a Pi4—but RAM/CPU/mini-SD doesn't quite cut it.

Desiderata: not a full tower if poss (prefer Mac Mini form factor), mainstream architecture, reasonable price, efficient power use.

May wish to add gfx card later for gaming. (eGPU on mini PCs—doable?)

Have built boxes in the distant past, but I value my time.

(Reply guy pre-empting—actual experiences please, avoid "you ACTUALLY want Y not X" etc.)

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@tommorris I’m looking for the same thing. If you hear about something that works, please yell about it.

I know @thisismissem got a Peladn mini PC recently but I don’t know if she’s using it as a server or for something else. Perhaps she’ll chime in. 🙂

I have personally been looking at Minis Forum but haven’t bitten yet.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@thisismissem @tommorris That sounds very frustrating. I hope you can get it fixed soon.

Did you like it, for the time it was functional?

And where did you order from? I had a look but it seems like there’s a lot of suppliers and I was a bit overwhelmed.

Discord seems to be down, so I went to Twitter to see if they were posting anything. (Their status page is not that helpful.)

I'm not logged into Twitter, so here's what I see: a bunch of posts, out of order, with the first non-pinned one from September last year.

So even if they're posting, I'll never know, because Twitter can't even put a feed in reverse-chronological order any more. And of course, I can't see replies.

Why is anyone using this thing to disseminate information any more?

When you run out of gmail space, what's the easiest way to delete a bunch of stuff online and keep it locally?

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@misc Haven’t tried this in a while, but in theory, I think you could sync it with a mail client such as Thunderbird or macOS Mail and then back up the .mbox files.

There may be lots more files to back up though. I’m not sure. Perhaps this helps you ask the right questions.

Slowly but surely I am learning to mute the folks that appear too often in my timeline as cheerleaders or instigators of views I might hold in a much less bombastic way if it seems that's all they do.

This is kind of an extension of what I was saying about Meidas Touch and friends - there are folks whose every RT is perhaps something newsworthy, but it's always accompanied with the "Trump is a fat bastard! Lock him up!" level of commentary.

Look, by all means, convict the gentleman and send him to jail - he's a criminal. But I'm telling you, the rage machines are doing the devil's work, even when they are right, and I have started muting and blocking on a whiff of the bad odor.

I promise you, you lose nothing except the always-on outrage.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@grrrr_shark Smart move. I’m doing the same.

I don’t begrudge people the need to show their anger about injustice. I can understand it. But I don’t need it on here.

samir, to random
@samir@functional.computer avatar

I am so fucking tired.

I think I’m sick but my brain won’t actually acknowledge it, so while I’m exhausted and my back hurts, I keep doing my thing.

(Well, I also have a small kid who does not truly understand what “Papa is sick” means. That is not their fault, though.)

I would love to sleep, but I can’t even do that. Brain is busy.

Someone tell me how to turn it off. Please.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

I appreciate all the thoughtful, sensible replies.

I just ate a bag of chocolate instead. That’s equivalent, right?

Much of what is said here about agile could equally be said of devops, a term that's been drained of whatever blood was pumping through it to the point that it functionally doesn't mean anything anymore.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@mhoye We knew the fight was lost as soon as we started seeing job adverts for a “DevOps Engineer”.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@mhoye I think you may have accidentally started a consultancy.

Isn’t this what success always looks like, though? People in suits take your thing, rip all the good bits out, plaster the names on their old, tired shit, and sell it for stupid amounts of money to people who don’t want any actual change.

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@grrrr_shark @mhoye I’m just jealous I didn’t think of it. I could use lots of money for delivering insane, incomprehensible PowerPoints.

Snort.

So ex complains whenever he gets the opportunity that 1) kiddo doesn't visit, and 2) I am somehow preventing her from visiting.

  1. she isn't that jazzed about seeing him, and
  2. he doesn't get that the fact that I can't stand him doesn't mean that I want her to feel the same way - I don't have enough energy for those kinds of stupid games.

Anyway, she travelled across the country this morning to visit him for a planned visit, and guess what?

Not answering his phone.
Door is locked.
Nobody is home.

She gave up and turned around to come home.

There are reasons I can't stand that gigantic douchebag.

I talk to people from the UK pretty regularly, I watch a lot of BBC programming, I read a lot of books by authors from the UK, but sometimes they will suddenly use a word I've never heard in my life, and I'm beginning to think they are pranking us, and every other person from the UK is in on the joke, and just validates whatever the other person says!

Pro tip: if you’re going to do a massive fraud, try to avoid defrauding rich white people, or they’ll set their goons on you.

Play it safe. Defraud poor people instead.

I need your help, compiling a top ten list. What are your Top Evil Reasons a Manager in Organization needs influence:

  1. To sabotage other teams

  2. To undermine stakeholders they don’t like.

Evil reasons only

samir,
@samir@functional.computer avatar

@mlevison My favourite is what we’re seeing in the news every day right now: managers/executives ensuring a big payout and a reservation for the ejector seat, right before the business nosedives.

Nothing to do with “agile”, but your examples aren’t either. The methods may differ based on organisational governance, but the goals are the same.
