@schamspeare@mstdn.social

Interested in anonymity, imaginary ailments, 70's electro-acoustic music (among other musics), mysterious books (not mysteries!), movies (mostly high pretension classics and campy b-movies), doing chess puzzles and playing chess at the idiot level, dogs (except tiny ones bred to be carried). Dislikes: short-sleeved collared shirts, the writing in recent tv shows, people who seem to like everything.

I cannot, for the life of me, get my head around the ’s storage restrictions, iCloud or otherwise. Yesterday I deleted a 1Gb audiobook and half a dozen podcasts. Today I put a 500Mb audiobook on it and now it’s not even letting me refresh my mail, that’s how full it apparently is. No other apps updated or anything. Don’t understand the math.

With the #Criterion 25% off sale, their blu-rays are just about at reasonable, bullshit-free prices. Now, if only they’d announce a sale.

Supreme Court to rule that nobody is above the law except presidents—presidents are above the law. And lawless ones most of all are above the law, since they are the ones who test it out. And when they get back in office for a second time after trying to illegally stay in office, their authoritarian seizure of limitless power will be limited, not by law, which will have given them carte blanche, but by the good graces we can depend on them having. Brilliant. At least they’ve thought it through.

#Elsbeth mystery: Hmm, you said he committed suicide, but gee, would a suicide stab himself forty times? Say, I noticed there were only five knives in your knife sheath. One slot is empty. Where’s the sixth? In fact, what’s that in your hand?

You got me, Ellsbeth. You’re smarter than you seem.

Strongly tempted to order Criterion's Straw Dogs almost solely for the special features, which look to be many and interesting. It's not a film I enjoy much, unfortunately, though I count myself a Peckinpah admirer. I'd be buying it out a sort of scholarly interest. https://www.criterion.com/films/730-straw-dogs

Well, I’ve seen both movies now. My reactions to both were the same: I don’t think they’re great films but I think they are good, competent adaptations of the novel and good Dune fan experiences, if you like the world of Dune. But they are a bit like Nolan films in that they seem sternly and rigidly on-track. Not a whiff of spontaneity, no real spark of life. Locked-down, airless filmmaking. Not my cup of tea.

I realize I have the habit of making everything an opposition to Marvel / Star Wars filmmaking, but I feel like everyone at those houses could use a dozen viewings of this. Because the storytelling here is so direct — today’s writers would probably see it as unsophisticated. Set-up and payoff, one after another. Crystal clear objective. Characters delineated in a minimum of brush strokes. Moments that tug at the heart with the lightest of touches. So many lessons here.

#StarTrek episode 10, Corbomite Maneuver. Strong alien encounter episode, strong ticking clock episode, strong Kirk episode. Classic stuff.

Again, I have to question the wisdom of the “upgraded effects.” There is nothing inherently “better” about sharper images of the alien craft. You could argue that a certain blurriness enhances the mystery.

@ivory Hi there. Small request based on my usage of the hashtag button above the keyboard when making a post. When you try to add a hash to a word you’ve used earlier in your post, putting the cursor before the word, it creates a space between the hash and the word. I don’t know if there’s a benefit to this behavior for other users. For me, it feels awkward.

(Thanks.)

schamspeare,
@schamspeare@mstdn.social avatar

@ivory I realize that and have, of course, used it that way, but I wondered why it couldn’t do both, why it couldn’t be a shortcut to the hash, for whatever use, and why it creates that space. I’m sure you have your reasons. As I said, I just couldn’t see what they might be.

Sacred cows of #film and #tv that I find myself second-guessing…

  1. Daniel Craig
  2. Tilda Swinton
  3. Bill Hader

I don’t mean to say that I think they’re terrible. Not at all. They’re just unique in that I don’t think I’ve ever heard a negative word about them — only excessive praise. They completely skirt criticism. Everybody just takes for granted that they never put a foot wrong, that they’re “amazing,” etc. Whereas, I look hard and have to admit that I don’t always see the exceptionalism.

Here's to all the dudes drafting new fantasy racks on #ModWiggler today. As has been said elsewhere, this planning / concept phase is sometimes as much fun as playing with actual modules. I have two racks. I'm considering a no-filter set-up for one (well, except for band pass, but still — pretty radical for me). For the other, a 208 hp rack with just 16 hp of oscillator?
