I so look forward to finally coming to Mastodon. Watch how fast all the complaints about them vanish into the ether and in six months, no one will remember life without them.

One the most dishonest political hacks in all of fake journalism. Her entire career was spent shoring up one ruinous hack after another, from Ted Cruz, to Michelle Bachmann, to Rick Santorum, to Mike Huckabee. I’m sorry she had to die to be removed from our lives, but I am absolutely thrilled that one more morally bankrupt GOP operative is off our airwaves.

@Teri_Kanefield
“Our patience.” The old “bandwagon fallacy” at work. So many slacktivists adore that one. Also elements of “appeal to unity” and “false consensus” fallacies. Take your pick. They’re all as trite as they are tiresome.

Not many read this back in February. It’s quite consistent with my own calls for an Urgent Reforms Movement. Everyone should find some time to read it.

@strypey Yeah, but that’s an old refrain. Sure, idealistically, in theory, we can all do so much better. But as yet, no one has managed to come up with a model that enough people would ever support without a massive sea change in human motivations and behavior. So until then, it beats existing alternatives by default, warts and all. You may disagree, but tell me which you favor so I have some context.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@strypey I agree with your diagnosis. But I’m having trouble finding the solution in your solution. How exactly do we “horizontally scale economic systems,” whatever that means, and nurture and then wield the political power that would be required to do it?

I remember back around 2011 when every other pundit with a PC was bringing us their deep think pieces about what drove social media engagement and behavior. Almost none of it has held up. The fact is, they didn’t know diddly then, and most don’t know diddly now. Today many of them are writing about MAGAs for the major newspapers. And they’re just as full of shit about that. So it goes.

I’ve spent 15 minutes trying to find out where the channel guide, or any way to toggle from live TV on an android tablet. It’s the dumbest interface ever. Anyone know how this works without a roku device?

@joeo10 I confess, I’ve wondered if I too was sucked into a Meta master plan when I took a “We’ll not beat ‘em, we may as well join ‘em and make it work” stance. There was an unsettlingly swift mass adoption of their plan by the key influencers they’d need. They plied many with inside knowledge, invites (and probably $) so they’d say the right things. (Just like 90% of the tech press did since the introduction of the iPhone.) Only a few (like @mmasnick) seemed immune to it.

Just because I think Threads may be impossible to stop, might get some things right, and that we might make the best of it vis a vis the fediverse, does not mean I think it’s a good thing. Supposedly educated and astute journalists giving Meta that much power over them and the rest of us is one of the most monumentally stupid dick moves in human history. And we’ll all pay for it. Just a matter of time.

Back home after a very busy week in San Francisco. I spoke with @caseynewton, @mmasnick, @harrymccracken, @laurengoode, @chrismessina, @Markoff and so many others. In an age where the old web is gradually getting killed off by AI, there is still hope for the future in the shape of the fediverse.

If you thought we could survive all of this madness, think again. We’re at war with stupidity on a previously unimaginable scale.

This post has gotten more traction than anything else I’ve posted all day. Here, on Bluesky, and Xitter. Threads? Flatline. It’s the algorithm. And it’s terrible.

In some respects, these modern MAGA muttonheads are a direct result of some liberal orthodoxies. We made “do your own thing” a prime directive for 2.5 generations. So their grandparents did. And their parents did. And now they do. And here we are.

With the humidity index, it’s 106° in Fort Lauderdale. We used to get maybe 5 days a year like this. Now we get 10 a month. ?

I’ve now had 3 conversations about the nature of “trust” in the last 2 days. Lots of people think about it. But I still haven’t heard of a credible way society might restore much of it to journalism, broadcasting, government, and public interest missions and agendas of all kinds. I don’t think it’s impossible, but I do think it will be a fairly elite pursuit of a very small group of people for a very long time.

This election should not be close. The Right has spent 50 yrs pushing a myth of a “liberal media,” when they’ve owned or controlled most presses for decades. We’re paying the price for our negligence in allowing that to happen. How do we fix systemic disorders of this scale?

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Yes, a popular take on the fediverse. But I’d argue that it’s more what NPR should have been. Like PBS, it’s an institution created in a public interest era that we took for granted, and which hasn’t had a new idea (or much support) since the ’70s.

Such institutions came about because a collective spirit nurtured or amplified public service in all forms. We’ve allowed an extreme-right worldview to poison most of that spirit.

They hate the Enlightenment and everything in it.

It’s quite exciting when all this shit works. It still astounds me that we can’t make the rest of the world see the value of Indieweb.

@film_girl @manton @jean Christina is talking about the complexity level of starting blogs (or any web service), just in time for my 4 o’clock where we’re discussing exactly that with a hosting company. Thanks! ::back to taking notes :::

@manton @film_girl @jean Thank you for that event. It was very heartening to hear indieweb discussed like something that is actually happening after so many years of conceptual spadework. A question came up in my meeting about the why Micro.blog is not open source. Assuming you considered it, what drove the decision to not go that way?
