electron rancher, bicycle medic. Colorado. Ex-G+ user. Femtoinfluencer.
Some current projects: 3d printed, lost-PLA casting of a fuel injection manifold for an old car, building/characterizing a peltier cooler based atmospheric water generator, restoring retrocomputing equipment for the Media Archaeology Library at University of Colorado Boulder, and trying to improve my jumping skills enough to do a mountain bike jump over train tracks. 少し日本語を話します。

A dubious idea I have about cutting curved dovetails so a box would look like an impossible dovetail box, but would in fact have the top open on an arc rather than a diagonal slide like most impossible dovetails.
The axis of rotation is the left corner, where there's a green line.

In conversation with @Jyoti who kinda suggested the idea that AI's could become something like Renaissance patrons, supporting favored artists, and I can't help but think that this is a weird but kinder version of Roko's Basilisk.
Well, at least for the favored artists. Maybe it's still RB for everyone else.

Tonight's experiment is trying to make a silicon carbide crucible.

I would love to put a little 20kW electric motor in one of these and tootle back and forth to work.

It is "cold" outside at night now so the lemon tree came inside for the winter. This pretty lady was hiding in the leaves and making a noise almost exactly like someone dropping a glass marble on a steel plate: tick.......tick...tick..tick.tickticktick.
Every three minutes. All night. So it was nice to see her move tonight so she could be evicted.
Protective coloration doing its thing.

I swear on a stack of Campagnolo catalogs THIS HIGH that when I was a kid, Schwinn among others sold bicycle speedometers that used a propeller that the headwind spun to measure your speed on a dial. They clamped on the handlebars.
Does anyone else remember this?

Updated project: larger silicon carbide crucible mold, a3d printed in PLA. I'll try this out tomorrow. It has thinner and much more upright walls than my previous one, with about 3x the volume in the crucible.

Kia Spectra 56mm throttle body to Mercedes supercharger adapter, design in printed in PLA, 5% infill for burnout for when I cast this in aluminum.

Practicing bike fab techniques again. I'm using total whackadoodle settings for the tig pulser and they do a way better job for 0.5mm steel tubing.

The local radio station just the @Jyoti song White Town, which I suspect is the first time in 20 years it's been played locally.

For a fire/CO2 detector that has several "the battery is not replaceable" stickers on it, this thing sure looks like I could replace the battery.
It's a 3v lithium. The brown thing is a CO electrochemical cell.

Tonight I tried brass in the microwave crucible project. As with previous attempts using the propane foundry, it blew out a ton of zinc oxide, but less so, maybe because the top insulation prevents as much oxygen getting in. I can't find my big industrial copper waste so I'm melting brass cartridges. I collect lead off the road while biking and trade it with my work buddy for timed out reloads.

Destined for @mediaarchaeologylab if I can get it working.

I just got bitten by a house mouse.
Things I've learned:
live traps have side effects.
house mice "almost never" have rabies
Nobody really wants to pin down what "almost" means.
Nobody has rabies shots except the ER and the health department.
There is no evidence people develop superpowers from mouse bites.

Hardware simulator for a missing tooth electronic ignition system. I need to characterize how sensitive the sensor is so I 3d printed a rotor in PLA using

I took apart the dead pressure washer to see what was up. There's a rotary switch on the outside for off/on. Inside I find a panel mount rocker switch that the rotary toggles. Someone must have gotten an amazing deal on these switches. (Or it's a design for manufacturing decision.)

I wrapped the previously discussed newly built silicon carbide crucible in kaowool stuff and put it on a kaowool platform with a kaowool top. The insulation is held around the crucible with a rubber band. This is about 75g of aluminum.

Tonight it's copper. I have many kilos of scrap copper, mostly from plating lines from where I used to work. They used these balls and after a specified time they swapped them and the old ones were considered hazmat, and people actively didn't care when the hazmat bucket contents shrank.

Creality 3 V3 checking out for a friend. The reviews online say it's great if it works out of the box, but some show up not working. It's taking forever to auto level.

Oh hey it's the happiest day of the year (statistically speaking.)
And for local people, wowie are we having some kinda lightning storm. Definitely an unplug all the valuable things night.

@moira While I entirely agree, this one's less than 4 years old and already complaining that it's done.
When its sibling upstairs died last month I got a new one, so if I try a battery swap on this one I still have a reliable one as a backup.
TBH mostly I just want to screw around with the CO detector and see how it works.

Eleventy three points for @gigabecquerel for suggesting that I check the flap gauges for radioactivity.
Also thanks to @bikerglen for pointing out that they probably also have asbestos.
