I was at a gas station and the stupid gas pump ad machine was yammering "a dirty fuel system can reduce your car's performance" and I hate listening to ads so I snapped back "a dirty fuel system can reduce yer mom's performance" and the woman who was standing RIGHT BEHIND ME for no obvious reason as it's a huge empty gas station did a spit take so hard she shot pepsi out her nose and hit my back with it and then covered her face and started coughing and now neither of us can ever go there again.

When I was walking back from the auto parts store with four brake pads in one hand and my N95 dangling from the other, my next door neighbor said "still masking? How long are you going to keep that up anyway?"
What I said: until people stop dying of covid.
What I thought: dude you were in the hospital on a respirator for a month in 2020 and in the last year have had two heart attacks and a stroke.

A good friend just found out that genetic material she stored 5 years ago before starting to transition was destroyed 4 years ago by the company, Legacy, and they kept charging her for storage until they notified her last week about what they'd done, and in the meantime told her that everything was fine and being handled correctly. Just in case any y'all were thinking about this.

64 bits of coremem. This is probably the pitch I'll use if I make a big plane. It's surprisingly quick to lace the write lines once you learn a few tricks, so much so that I'm less inclined to design a jig to do it. (The sense line however is likely going to suck so I have this board set up for four sense lines if necessary.) 32ga wire as I've determined that the required current is less than 300mA.

Since it's that time again, Corsi Rosenthal diy air filter system build around a box fan. 20x25 furnace filters on the sides and end with 25“ square top and bottom and Tyco brand metallized ducting tape seam seals. Pretty cheap, pretty quick build.

Headtube badge for an Ibis Mojo mountain bike, for a friend who loves Snoopy and big jumps. Body in brass with copper doghouse. Teeth in an inlay in polished stainless steel shim stock, body in titanium with coloration done using voltage oxidation with different resists painted on. I had to rivet the teeth and body to the back plate using crazy tiny handmade silver rivets. It needs a little more cleanup but this is basically done.

I boosted @kissane's latest post but I think it's important enough reading that it deserves the masto equivalent of a quote tweet. Erin is a good writer, did a lot of how-mastodon-security-is-implemented research and thinking about Threads, and I think this is something anyone here should read.

Ya see good stuff whilst biking that you miss at car speeds.
I dunno if is a common tag, but hey let's try it.

The Daniels & Fisher clock tower in downtown Denver is open for self guided touring, and it's kinda expensive unless you're really into being inside a giant clock, especially one built entirely of wrought iron and concrete in 1902. I was chatting with the woman who runs it and was all wow you're living Hugo, and her eyes got really big and she said I had totally forgotten about that book but I AM!
The existing decor is some wild bridal goth circa 1999.

Took the old cat to the vet today because he was having chronic cold-like symptoms that would clear up and then return after a few days. Other cats in the house got it too but he reacted the worst given his age (16+ years). Turns out (at least according to the veterinarian) lots of other pet owners are experiencing the same thing and they suspect it is coronavirus related. So another reason to mask up, esp. since it's too early to tell what long-term effects it may have on our pet friends. 😢

@gulovsen I've a friend whose rottweiler got covid. It presented more or less as meningitis and nearly killed the dog: in a medically induced coma for a week and struggled to walk for a while afterwards. Tested positive for covid.

This giant flock of birds? These are geese. I've never seen this many in one place before. The sound they made was amazing. The fields were filled with them as well.

Thousands of Canada geese in flight, and thousands more on the ground.

It's extremely windy outside, and they're forecasting up to 100mph gusts across the whole metro area. After the Marshall Fire in 2021, where several fires, one possibly from a downed powerline, swept through the western suburbs of Denver, driven by 70mph winds, it appears that the power company may be cutting power to some of the area, including where I live. This'll be interesting. Right now it sounds like a jet aircraft is running at idle just over the hill.

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

If you look at wind records for this area over the last 100 years, getting >80mph winds used to be a once every 25 years event, and only just outside Boulder on one ridge. Now it's something that happens multiple times a year across a much broader area. This is the first time I remember seeing a prediction of gusts over 100mph for the area I live.

This guy has a minecraft world with mods for trains. He makes factories, and buildings & it's fun. But then he puts freight cars on an express train (made of Minecraft blocks) & almost gets canceled by rail foamers.

Rail fans are... unique.

My husband works for a railroad ... people can't understand why we both stress that we ARE NOT rail fans. No no not "like that" LOL.

(to their credit the foamers forgave the minecraft guy but ... they had to do some emotional work.)

smellsofbikes,
@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird back in the dark ages, "model railroading" mag ran a cartoon of a guy in a conductor outfit and a guy in Harley leathers eyeing each other and thinking "weirdo" and the magazine got absolutely hammered with furious mail about how railfans were nothing like Harley riders and the cartoon was practically libel. I think that's when Dad canceled his subscription because he was so appalled at how angry and hostile other MR people were.
