Planting trees as a means of carbon capture is snake oil, and I believe the likes of Google and Microsoft are too smart to fall for it, so that begs the question - what’s their true motive for doing this?
Money.
Appearing to be eco friendly reduces the chances of regulations that would make them have to change their terrible polluting practices. Any kind of carbon offsets are a distraction to reduce public or regulatory pressures that end up costing money.
So the thing about trees is, there are right ways and wrong ways to plant them. It should be obvious that plantng a tree in a desert won’t just lead to a forest, but the same is true to a lesser degree in most locations. It is necessary to choose the right locations that will have water available, and good soil, and some other conditions for the trees to thrive.
Companies doing it will most likely just dump a bunch of seeds or saplings in an area that won’t support long term growth, claim the numbers, and then let the trees die off.
Actual reason? Not sure because I wasn’t around for the comment period.
Likely reason? People are terrible at making decisions based on ranges or anything more complex than a single number. They aren’t even that good at a single number.
Since mixed things like trail mix can have some variety in ratio from bag to bag, going with an average and some variance means having some kind of flexibility. Then there are vegetables and other plants that can vary wildly too.
But what about something like gummy bears where the whole thing is very consistent? Can’t have different rules for different foods, because companies will tie the whole thing up in court.
So the end result is a rule that allows flexibility for the things that actually need it that is also applied to everything else for simplicity.
Csst iron and stainless are really good for most things, and ceramic non-stick does a great job of filling the niche of a small and quick pan that doesn’t use as much oil as stainless and doesn’t need the heat retention of cast iron. Plus the ceramic surface holds up way better than other non-stick coatings.
Trump being worse deosn’t mean we can’t criticize Biden right now as the sitting president. I have been very supportive of the need to vote for Biden over Trump, but the Democrats need to stop doubling down on denying the atrocities in Gaza already.
Like they aren’t even using nuance or anything at this point. Threateninng the ICC is absolutely ridiculous.
So one of the other things that is very frustrating is always being told that we just need to wait until after the next election to criticize anything. Our election cycles never seem to end.
