Good morning Nina!

@santiago awww he totally could! 💖

@santiago Nina's story is that a friend of a friend found her in the street all alone when she was less than a month old, so I don't really know where she came from or what happened to the rest of her family. Tadinha... 💔

@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@santiago omgggg 😍😍😍 I got Nina in 2021 but I think she was found in Copa near the bottom of Tabajaras so like...they actually could be siblings?! Is DNA testing for cats a thing???

    @blinken 🤣 one of my cats figured out how to open the wardrobe, but thankfully so far the worst thing she's done in there is throw a bunch of clean towels on the floor

    Hey, sewing-competent folks: I have a pair of (cheap but comfortable) jeans where one of the back pockets has developed a small hole: not on the seam, but in the fabric near it. I'd like to patch it, but I have 1) no iron, 2) minimal sewing skills, 3) cheap ‘sew on a button' sewing materials, 4) the need to be able to wear this to work--so casual is fine for my repair/patch options, but nothing too cutesy/weird/aggressive.

    Suggestions?

    @fade hey @dynamic do you have a tutorial or anything for the way you fixed your jeans? They looked awesome

    @rbellinger@mastodon.social avatar

    I missed this article on Lyft's bizarre admission that they bought Motivate (big city operator) to sell taxi rides to bikers.

    "We haven't done the job we need to do to make sure that every time a person rides the bike, they get welcomed into the Lyft ecosystem, and frankly, welcomed into the rideshare side of things"

    You know, exactly the opposite of why people use bikeshare.

    https://www.vice.com/en/article/pka3kn/lyft-the-largest-bikeshare-operator-in-north-america-wants-out-of-the-business

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @bhawthorne @rbellinger we definitely don't need bikeshare companies, but publicly owned bikeshare could be helpful. Not everyone has the space for their own bike

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @brainwane @bhawthorne @rbellinger yeah, the system should be designed so that people who only want to bike for part of a trip are encouraged to use public transit for the longer legs. Mixing modes of transport isn't inherently bad--the problem here is capitalism

    I built the worst and most ridiculous Commander deck, and I am pleased with myself. Colorless, built around Karn, Silver Golem and Mimic Vat... all about making copies of copies of copies.

    @xgranade oh god I've barely ever played Commander but I hate this so much 🤣

    @xgranade I think annoying your opponent can be a valid strategy? As long as you annoy them more than you annoy yourself

    @StillIRise1963 @panamared27401 @aprilfollies my cats know their own names and each other's names. I know this because they often ignore their own names but if I call one of them the other one will come to investigate 🤣

    slcw, to chess
    @slcw@newsie.social avatar

    Why the hell are tournaments segregated by ? I understand (but don't necessarily agree with) gender segregation in , but there's no involved in playing chess. can play chess just as well as those with all of their faculties. Segregating chess by gender seems completely , and unnecessary.

    https://www.express.co.uk/sport/othersport/1803463/Transgender-women-banned-from-competing-in-women-s-chess-tournaments/amp

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @slcw banning trans women sucks and is completely indefensible, but my understanding is that most chess tournaments are open to all genders and the women's tournaments are the only ones with restrictions. There are fewer women chess players, especially at the higher levels, so it makes sense to have dedicated tournaments for us, but trans women are women and should be allowed to compete in women's tournaments if they want to!

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @slcw it's not segregated, though? There's no such thing as a "men's" chess tournament. But the idea of setting up events specifically for women is to encourage more women to play. That would be a good thing as long as the events are open to all women and not just terves

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @slcw the fact that you're saying "girls" when we're talking about WOMEN is exactly why these events are necessary 💀

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @slcw anyone of any age can start playing chess and/or join a club for the first time.

    I actually have a friend who's a trans woman who was a quite serious chess player before coming out and then stopped for a few years, and part of what motivated her to get back into playing was realizing that when she was at the top of her game she'd had the rating for a women's title. Women's titles are rated lower, but women can go for the regular titles as well. This is going to devastate her 💔

    Trump gets a lot of millage complaining about:

    • electric stoves
    • meat alternatives
    • low flow toilets and showers
    • CFC free hair spray (he's still mad we fixed the ozone hole)
    • LED light bulbs (which are objectively better than incandescent)
    • masks
      etc.

    But it's not just one old man's weird fixation, he's people really relate to these complaints.

    Some know-it-all do-gooder wants to lecture you, make you do something a little differently. It chafes. I almost understand-- 1/

    sofiav,
    @sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

    @futurebird but also changing hairsprays and whatever else they did actually DID fix the ozone hole problem, whereas switching toilets and lightbulbs isn't doing a lot for climate change/water shortages because the fixes needed are a lot bigger...I absolutely agree that "green shopping" is a con. But conservatives are going to hate the actual solutions to climate change even more (communism and degrowth) 🤷‍♀️

    sofiav,

    2023 Feb 12: Wired:

    "God Did the World a Favor by Destroying Twitter"

    by Paul Ford

    Excerpt:

    Twitter’s troubles are due not just to Musk, who appears to be both shooting himself in the foot and cauterizing the wound with his own brand of flamethrower. No, Musk is merely the vehicle. The real reason Twitter lies in ruins is because it was an abomination before God. It was a Tower of Babel.

    [...]

    God does the wrath thing a lot in the Old Testament, punishing humans who would challenge divine authority. It makes sense to read the story of Babel in that light. But having lived through the past couple decades of the internet, I believe the story carries a different lesson. I’m an atheist, so take this theory with a grain of salt, or maybe even a pillar: God wasn’t keeping us out of heaven, smiting us for our arrogance. God was protecting us from ourselves.
