Everyone in Rio is freaking out over the impending Madonna show bringing ABSOLUTE CHAOS to most of the south zone and we're all receiving warnings like "for Saturday, STAY INSIDE and stock up on food and beer" ๐Ÿ’€

Apparently a common vegetarian substitute for the shank bone on the Seder plate is a roasted beet, so I got a beet for tonight because where the fuck was I supposed to get one (1) shank bone, so now I'm thinking about whether or not to roast one (1) beet

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@Loukas I think that's the idea? Although the shank bone is traditionally just a dried bone, not a bloody piece of raw meat ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@Loukas it's all very metaphorical and shit lol ๐Ÿ˜…

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@Loukas right?! ๐Ÿคฃ Like, there's probably a rabbi on here who could give me a 5000-word theological answer to each of these questions if I really wanted to ask, but I'm more interested in adapting the tradition into something I can do without too much headache. I like preserving the rituals up to a point, but I'm not actually religious so if I'm going to offend god by doing it wrong then fuck him tbh ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I always find thereโ€™s an interesting parallel to be made between and .

Does the fact that the inquisition and fascist contemporary evangelical churches exist make the teachings of sharing, non-violence, love and forgiveness wrong ?

Same for existence of gulags or state repression in USSR vs the possibility of a classless society not designed on exploitation and profits.

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@santiago @peterg75 @Radical_EgoCom also need to point out that the "authoritarianism" of the USSR etc was a reaction to the continual capitalist attempts to undermine them, and that when they finally fell it resulted in mass hardship in the newly "liberated" countries. And calling smaller communal societies that sustained themselves for centuries before being destroyed by capitalist colonialism "primitive" is frankly racist

I don't think the rest of the world has noticed how fucking weird it is that Elon Musk said that a Brazilian Supreme Court judge had "betrayed the constitution" (???) and should be impeached

(Also remember that his comment about the coup against Evo Morales was "we will coup whoever we want") ๐Ÿ’€

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿฟโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@daaain @mekkaokereke especially if a person's first language is Latin-based, because a lot of the "big words" in English have Latin roots, but the speaker might just be using the most direct translation of the word in their language and not even know there's a more common word for it in English ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Chess grandpa called us to play some chess this evening, and he also wanted us to read some of his favorite poet, so he also HAND WROTE FROM MEMORY about two pages from a poem that he likes and brought it along ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿฅฐ

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

Oh yeah, also last night Chess Grandpa asked me about my religious beliefs, I said I was an atheist, and he told me off...not for being an atheist, but for using the wrong word for "atheist". Which is the kind of completely ridiculous pedantry that I can appreciate ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

(I said "atรฉia" instead of "ateu" because I'm a woman, but according to a more prescriptivist view of Portuguese grammar "ateu" should be for both genders because of Greek etymology and etc etc but I don't speak Greek so ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ)

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@santiago ugh...in my experience people have been generally okay with me just saying I'm an atheist, but that kind of thing definitely makes me nervous. (Chess Grandpa is agnostic and likes hearing about different views. He's awesome!)

Over on cohost, there's been an interesting discussion of driver entitlement in the US. It really feels like a quintessential example of the American myth of rugged individualism leading to an inversion understanding of power dynamics. It's not "I have power, and thus bear a responsibility to use it without causing harm," it's "I have power, and thus can get away with it."

https://cohost.org/NoelBWrites/post/5391197-empty

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@xgranade good discussion but I think it's drivers in general, not specific to the US/the Global North. One difference here in Brazil is that enough pedestrians still cross when they want to ("jaywalk" ๐Ÿ™„) that drivers know to expect it, but the drivers HATE IT

@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

People are going to complain that I'm subtooting again but I can't get over how annoyed I am by this whole BRI argument. China was one of the only countries that helped Brazil during the worst of the pandemic, sending vaccines here when Global North countries were hoarding doses and letting their pharmaceutical companies pressure GS countries into completely extortionate contracts, so yeah I'm going to believe that China can act benevolently because I'VE SEEN IT

sofiav,

@adamgreenfield GS countries are dealing directly with China after centuries of exploitation by the GN and y'all are assuming we're naive? That's incredibly patronizing

This Echeveria Lola succulent is about four years old. I had tried before to propagate it with leaf pullings without success. Late last summer it shifted in the pot with a different growth pattern (it looked healthy otherwise) and it seems it was making some room for more. This is the first watering of the year (I think) and I trimmed out the dead leaves that were covering the offsets and replaced it with a light cover of Seramis.

Oh you think you've seen the worst global capitalism has to offer? Not unless you've watched this, you haven't:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0lJc3PMNIg

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@inquiline wait, Belt and Road is socialist infrastructure designed to benefit the Global South, where it's desperately needed. This isn't at all the same as more luxury flights between adjacent rich American cities that are already connected by highway

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@inquiline this comes across as blaming GS countries for wanting to sell our resources to the GN within the global capitalist framework, when that's the only way we've been left with to gain the money necessary to help our people after centuries of colonialism followed by decades of anticommunist coups

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@inquiline I'm out so I can't watch the video with sound rn, but from the thumbnail it looks like an intentionally silly/dumb song with a cute dancing panda, which is far from the worst capitalist crime against Art that's ever been committed. It kind of seems like you just think everything that China does is just inherently EVIL because REASONS

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@adamgreenfield @inquiline as someone living in a country that stands to benefit greatly from Belt & Road, I completely disagree. They're offering investment that will allow us to develop on OUR terms, when the GN countries/corporations either offer debt traps or just try to buy out our resources for peanuts. Eg shortly after the 2016 coup in Brazil, the new US-backed coup gov announced that they would auction off the pre-salt oil deposit that the previous gov had said would fund education

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@adamgreenfield @inquiline China isn't immune to anti-Black racism, but they're a thousand times better than the US or Europe. Blaming them for situations caused by Western colonialism is ridiculous

sofiav,
@sofiav@mastodon.online avatar

@inquiline @julieofthespirits I just noticed that the original post is from last year so I'm not sure why it's getting boosted again now (and I don't remember who boosted it onto my tl). I didn't mean to revive an old thread, but I'm going to keep disagreeing with any effort to paint the BRI as "the worst of global capitalism" when it is, at minimum, an attempt to do better
