due to a conversation about how none of mxtx's novels are actually a great place to start for a western fan with no familiarity with the genre, I'm now curious:

for those of you who have read more widely, what do you think would be the best wuxia or xianxia danmei for a western newbie reader, in terms of a cross section of plot comprehensibility / being engaging / english translation quality, etc?

  • fx and xl are so SWEET together and fx and mq are so....united in their mutual disdain for each other and how they're connected with each other

  • and how sex with each other doesn't actually change any part of that for fengqing; they have a good time having hatesex, they still hate each other, they're connected forever via their hatred for each other and their mutual love of xl, and their mutual inability to understand /how/ the other approaches their love for xl

Delicious in Dungeon (aka Dungeon Meshi), by Ryoko Kui, translated by Taylor Engel

In a world of dnd-ish dungeon crawls, one person's dream is to cook and eat monsters to discover what kinds of food you can make of them. Follow this adventuring party as they travel deep into a dungeon, eating well as they go, on a quest to save a party member who was eaten by a dragon!

I adored every bit of this manga!!! The main characters are all a delight, and it's the kind of story where the author sees and shows you the inherent personness of all characters, including antagonists. And the world created to make sense of the dungeon's existence is fascinating, as are all the ways the ecosystems within the dungeon are expanded upon to make sense of the creatures living within it.

And it's a story that knows what its themes are, too, and is able to tie them all together in extremely satisfying ways in the climax of the narrative!

  • it pushes back against the traditional view of male vs female voices, of pitch being the main deciding factor in gendering voices, and of a voice's gender being immutable

my dad is looking for more historical cdramas to watch, and I told him I'd see if I could find some recs for him.

he's looking for cdramas that are available to watch free online (eg on viki), he prefers historicals, he enjoys some fighting, and previous shows he's enjoyed include The Untamed, Nirvana in Fire, Imperial Coroner, and Who Rules the World.

For those of you who watch more tv than me, what would you suggest?

pidw is just.....so good to think about

I think they don't talk about it, they don't act on it, they maybe don't even realise they feel it, but they are each other's most stable and reliable connection, no backstabbing or politicking or pretense

even when they're angry with each other it feels like a relief. no secrets between them. lbh can safely let all his worst qualities be visible, no need to turn on the seductive charm. mbj can relax in the knowledge he's not being played by someone who pretends to care.

mbj will do whatever his lord requires of him. lbh will protect his trusted lieutenant.

any other feelings are unnecessary for them to analyse or pay attention to

it suddenly occurred to me that although volunteering to write fic for fan auctions like fandom trumps hate doesn't feel doable for me, I COULD offer book reviews. but I see it is too late to sign up as a creator for this year's fandom trumps hate!

ah well. in future years maybe. throw money at a good cause and I will read a book of your choosing and write a review of it.

actually I might be willing to do that outside of an official framework like fth? hit me up for more details if this is something you want, I guess!

featuring the following:

  • lightmode colour scheme in warm lower-contrast sepia tones
  • with visual distinguishing between tags and tag types

so hard though sometimes to decide what counts as a rarepair. ships that nobody has thought about before except this one weird fic, ships that most people vaguely agree are reasonable but rarely ever write about, ships that have a tiny but dedicated fanclub, ships that get written about with some regularity but can't ever hope to reach the levels of the major ships in the fandom, etc. where on the continuum is something no longer a rare ship?

and the place to put that line changes depending on the size of the fandom too, I feel, making it even harder to be consistent throughout all my bookmarks for many fandoms!

@lirazel well, I wouldn't consider the main ship of even the tiniest yuletide-sized fandoms a rarepair, personally! like, say, Uriel/Little Ash is an obvious major ship from When the Angels Left the Old Country, so it still isn't a rarepair even though there are only 10 works for it on ao3, and I'm confident some of the ships I've tagged rarepair for cql have more fics than that!

@lirazel ah, different definitions of rarepair! I guess for me when I'm craving rarepairs, I'm looking for something that feels non-obvious, rather than something that doesn't have much written about it!

@lirazel @geraineon I would say that for me it's not quite this! it's like an intersection between canon and fandom. If the ship is canon and gets a fair amount of attention in canon then it's not a rarepair no matter how little fic there is. but if it's a minor background couple that appears in one scene in canon and never again, then it could still be a rarepair if fandom doesn't do much with them. and simultaneously a ship that isn't canon could be NOT a rarepair if it's one the fandom spends a lot of energy on, comparative to the size of the fandom

so EITHER canon OR fandom giving the ship a fair amount of focus would, I think, remove a ship from counting as a rarepair in my eyes

but also, even if a ship isn't canon and there's all of 3 fics for the ship, if those 3 fics are the majority of the extant fics on the internet for that canon, it's still not a rarepair to me. because it's getting the majority of the fandom's attention, such that there is!
