the episode of Common Descent Podcast I'm listening to right now is interviewing someone who studies foraminifera, and at one point when she refers to taking samples of plankton from the ocean she refers to "who" is in the sample - and then she immediately corrects herself to "what species"

and I'm just so charmed by this evidence of how much she thinks about plankton as beings she cares about!

the wikipedia article on Chinese numerology says in the same paragraph both that the number 4 has been unlucky since ancient times in China AND that the idea that 4 is unlucky is a recent development in China. impressive!

@geraineon hahaha yeah I'm guessing the story is complicated and whoever's hands were involved in writing up that section of the wiki article were unprepared to deal with that complexity! it does mention at least that in Cantonese 4 sounds nearly identical to death.

@geraineon the Wikipedia article says that in Teochew 4 sounds like happiness/joy, or like silk/Emperor's seal, and so is considered auspicious! of course I have no trust in this particular article at this point lol

@geraineon mostly, I find, the best option with clothes sewing is to start sewing it together in the way I THINK is right, and discover once I unfold things and turn it right side out whether it's seam ripping time, lol

@geraineon haha this pattern is advertised as the "world's simplest mittens" that you're supposed to be able to knock out super fast because you have an emergency need for mittens!
