video alt: an article on the Manchester Evening News about simulating the Manchester Utd vs Nottingham Forest game. It’s impossible to read the content because between each paragraph is ad ad and there’s auto playing video everywhere.

A truly horrific experience

@andy The irony that one ad talked about “how users are enabling ad blockers to save data”. 🫣

Truly a horrific example of what news sites have become.

Just moved our mattresses to the basement. Too hot to sleep comfortably in the bedroom.

houses were built for cold winters, not hot summers. And this house is 60+ years old.

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@phphil It isn‘t much better in newer buildings. My apartment complex is 9 years old. „Minergie“-standard.

Currently sitting at the kitchen table at 28° C.
We really need to build better homes in the very near future.

@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

For years we were talking at work about switching to . As it is for bigger projects the switch was not made yet.

Seeing the community ditching TypeScript (open source) project after project is a bit liberating.

I never was a friend of the syntax that brought a simple topic to hilarious proportions. I was never a friend of making JavaScript more complicated just for the sake of doing it.

JSDoc is a thing and it works in pretty much every editor. Most people that just want to type their stuff don't even need TypeScript.

But the TypeScript bubble is so loud, aggressive and patronizing, that new developers think they aren't aloud to just use JavaScript.

I'm glad I always reduced the priority of TypeScript in our company and now don't have to make the switch. The main reason for some colleagues was always: "Everyone is using it so we should too."

Now that's how the cookie crumbles.

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@kaiserkiwi We have one big JavaScript project at work, where we’ve prepared the tooling to support TypeScript.

We had the idea of slowly migrating some components to TS. Also as a learning exercise as we have no experience with it.

That was almost a year ago. Haven’t updated a single component. (Also hadn’t much time to work on the project at all)

Will probably propose to remove TS support again. Making sure dependencies are up to date is even more of a chore than in a regular JS project.

or ? And why? Fight!

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@cliophate The goal is to one day open source it and make it available for others. For now, it‘s just for my eyes only.
(UI is also in a very early alpha phase and probably too confusing for others)

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@cliophate I like Matter, as it has a Kindle integration that works and has the option to play/speak saved articles for you.
The Obsidian integration is a nice bonus.

Bought the Patreon membership when they announced it earlier this year, but will cancel that once that runs out. I think the yearly subscription will be something like 70-80$ per year which is a tad expensive for me for how often I'm using it.

(Currently building my own little read-it-later app that satisfies all me needs)

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@cliophate A read-it-later app like Matter/Readwise/Instapaper/Pocket, but that can be self-hosted on my server.

In addition, all saved entries can be converted to audio files and can be published to a private podcast feed. (Have so many entries that I like to listen to while cooking/commuting)

Next up I also would like to build a Kindle integration, so I could read stuff offline.

In a departure from my usual tech content, I wrote a blog post about my own journey in life and the progress I've made over the last two years since I felt like my life fell apart. Call it... character development.

@nicoverbruggen I can't speak from experience, but in their recent podcast episode, Adam Wathan talked about his weight loss. Shared that sneezing physically hurt him due to his body composition.

So … I'm happy you're also in better shape and feel much better. 💚

Anyone know a good simple WYSIWYG editor that is easily extendable?

Wanting to do things like hook into keypresses and show at cursor dropdowns for things like custom autocomplete.

It‘s incredible how good of a show Foundation is. The book is one of the most boring pieces of sci-fi ever. It had a few good ideas and the show ran with them and made them into something great.

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@marcel Love the show. Still debating with myself if I should start reading the books after I finish Hyperion Part 3 & 4.

You’re not the first one telling me the books are rather bland and boring.

I'm fed up with all read-it-later services out there, so I've started working on my own but with blackjack Podcast- and Kindle integrations. I've named it "Untitled Read It Later App" … for now.

Currently there's not much of a UI; but the core of extracting content from websites, synthesising the written text to audio and turning your queue to a podcast is already there.

Will share a dev-diary in this thread.

And even if I loose interest, I can still open source the work in progress and maybe someone will stumble upon it and will learn something from it.

Pausing development on my untitled-read-it-later-app this week to tackle a long standing issue with sidecar-browsershot: Update the used Chromium version and make it compatible with node 18/20.

The package uses a layer with v103 in it. I've already contributed an update to the layer to upgrade to v109, but that made it incompatible with the Spatie package.

Currently testing if I should just write my own layer and be in control of all the dependencies and how they work together. 🤔

My work colleague was a week off and I wrote her a 1200 word recap on what happened during her absence. Including links to meeting notes and pull requests.

Someone else doing this?

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@Skoop She could gather all information on her own by reading tickets or PRs, but I think a summary is quite nice.

stefanzweifel,
@stefanzweifel@phpc.social avatar

@tvbeek It was surprised myself when I saw that it's already 1200 words long.
Started with a bullet list in Obsidian, but wanted to add more context.

I think being written in German also makes the text naturally longer.
