strudel6242,

Oh this looks excellent, I’ll give this a crack. I tried looking for an app of a similar purpose a while back, but everything looked fishy as hell

I am a cyber security researcher specializing in automated binary analysis - AMA

https://github.com/angr/angr Uses a Concolic execution engine where it can switch from running a binary concretely, break, and then define an unknown input and find what should I be to trigger a different breakpoint. - e.g. what should the “password” pointer be pointing to in order to trigger the “you’re in” branch of...

strudel6242,

What was your journey like getting into this as a career? What have been some of the toughest challenges you’ve faced as a researcher? Why did you specialise in automated binary analysis?

strudel6242,

I’ve got this on my backlog to play. Enjoyed the hell out of the original Amnesia, and have been digging my teeth into Penumbra.

strudel6242,

Awesome, that’s probably where I’ll end up buying it. Love buying DRM free games.

strudel6242,

The current state of copyright and software patents just infuriate me to no end. It’s actively stifling innovation and competition, all in the name of money…

Reminder to backup your cloud password manager

Never rely on any cloud service! A good cloud based password manager is end to end encrypted meaning the password manager provider cannot access your passwords and they are secured from the provider and any compromise of the provider. But you do not only need confidentiality but also reliability. The cloud is just someone else's...

strudel6242,

Good tip, I’ll get on it. I use Bitwarden’s cloud server for convenience, but if they were to shut down tomorrow, I’d be screwed

strudel6242,

I’m very keen to see this get battle tested in reviewers hands, and especially seeing what developers can make this thing do. The price is very high, but if it can live up to its claim of supporting AR desktops from a MacBook, I could see businesses and on-the-go freelancers getting some great use out of it where space may be limited.

strudel6242,

Another Kagi subscriber here. I do it mainly to support the little guy rather than some big tech giant like Google or Microsoft, but I’m quite enjoying the new features they’ve been adding over time.

strudel6242,

I’ve just built my first NAS. I went very overkill for my needs, so bought 5x8TB drives, 32GB of RAM, a Ryzen 5600G, and 1TB of NVMe SSD storage to compliment my HDD space. I’ve installed TrueNAS and have plugged the HDDs into a RAID-Z2 config, yielding about 20TB of usable space, with the 1TB SSD being a separate pool for anything that can benefit from faster IO, which have generally been applications / VMs. Currently using it as a network drive for all my data, and am using BorgBackup to ensure everything’s backed up. At some point I’d like to get a remote BorgBackup repository going, but I’ve not gotten around to it yet.

I’m also using it to host a VM for my web dev projects I can access via RDP and Tailscale, and have started installing PhotoPrism for my photos, SyncThing for my dev projects (so I can continue coding across my PC and laptop seamlessly), and eventually I’d like to get Plex / Jellyfin going, though I already have a setup going via WhatBox.

strudel6242,

Can’t say I have. Have you got any resources I could look into to get started?

strudel6242,

That would be pretty nice. I wonder if votes are stored purely as numbers or if there's a table mapping users to posts they've up/down voted

strudel6242,

Bit on the weaker side, but I've sunk over 100 hours into Factorio and not once have I launched the rocket. I'm something of a perfectionist myself, which makes it tough to not want to start over.

Problem is, when I start over I've got a huge wall to climb to get back to where I was.

strudel6242,

Yeah, I got a lot of fundamental computer science from Minecraft's redstone too. Making a 3x3 piston door was basically a work of art haha

strudel6242,

explaining basic c++11 features to the TA in 2018 yikes!

I feel like universities have a special opportunity to teach really cool concepts that would be impractical in bootcamps and such; learning about the maths behind algorithms and data structures, how to evaluate them objectively, learning about grammars and expressions, building interpreters / compilers, all this stuff that can be really useful if you find yourself working beyond simple CRUD stuff.

That being said, these days so much work is just CRUD, so ymmv.

Why is it so annoyingly hard to set up a Fediverse node?

Everyone (and their mother) have been trying to convince me that I should use one of my less loaded servers to be a Fediverse node. However, all Fediverse software packages I checked only support being installed on complicated systemd + Docker machines. My servers don't have either of those, because neither systemd nor Docker...

strudel6242,

What pain points do you find with Linux? How does OpenBSD differ?

strudel6242,

Thanks for your answer, being fairly out of the loop on all of this it's quite interesting to hear. I've also experienced a number of upgrade pains. I'm quite diligent with storing important data external to the OS, but it still sucks when the only real option is to nuke the drive and install again.

strudel6242,

You still on vanilla, or have you started diving into Greg’s mods?

strudel6242,

Yeah, I do miss those old titles, before “RPG Creed” took over. Hopefully the new title brings the series back to form, emphasising stealth and parkour rather than combat.

strudel6242,

I tried getting into Talos, but I was stubborn and wanted to complete all the hard puzzles as I went along. Some of those puzzles are crazy, I ended up getting frustrated and out down the game.

I really should get back into it; I hear there’s a lot of secrets in the game that you can find if you pay attention to what’s going on and read everything.

strudel6242,

I’ve been making my way through the STEINS;GATE 0 visual novel, and I’ve been having a great time. It’s effectively replaced watching TV/anime for me; I turn on my nvidia shield, stream the game, and off I go.

strudel6242,

Outer Wilds has got to be one of my all time favourite games, it’s just so good! The echoes of the eye DLC is top notch too.
