Jing Jing Palo Alto is closing after 38 years! It's the end of an era. I've had many good meals there. I remember when it opened, replacing a rather nondescript Chinese restaurant called the Four Seas, which looked like a repurposed diner with a counter and faded green vinyl booths. Looking forward to a takeout/delivery venture the owner mentions in the SFGate article.

@m501 @jddarcy The orange peel chicken (aka mouth peel chicken, because it was so hot), and Szechuan Dan Dan mein were my favorites. I haven’t been able to recreate the orange peel sauce, but I was able to recreate a passable substitute for the Dan Dan sauce using tahini, sesame oil, chili oil, soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, and sugar. (Tahini instead of peanuts because my daughter is allergic.)

Another Jing Jing memory… like many Chinese restaurants, the menu would have a way to indicate which dishes were spicy hot. Jing Jing did this by printing the item in red. The “Jing Jing Specialties” menu page was printed entirely in red! In addition, there was a note at the bottom that said something like, “Do not request ‘no spicy hot’ for these items. We make the dish the way it is supposed to be made!” (Their recent menu seems more flexible.)

OMG I found an old Jing Jing takeout menu in my files. Note the 415 area code in the phone number; this establishes the date as prior to 1997 when this region switched to the 650 area code. Indeed, every item in the Specialties section is printed in red, it says “Please do not request ‘No spicy hot’…”), and the note at the bottom says (in all caps) “We cook the way it is supposed to be. No substitution of any ingredients.” So I was pretty close!

Did you know the interior of the average oven door can hold up to as much as 2 ounces of fully cooked dal?

It’s true. The trick, as I’ve discovered, is to make sure the dal is evenly distributed throughout the interior of the oven door and between as many layers of oven door window glass as possible.

I've been seeing more posts recently about AIs getting poisoned by training on AI bullshit, but this reminds me of the time I assigned students to go find a red-black tree implementation on the web and then test it and fix the bugs they found. most of the available implementations were so wrong that the assignment was infeasible, and this was well before the current wave of AI-generated bullshit.

@regehr Wow, this is one heck of an assignment. Even if some of the code wasn’t feasible to fix, it might be a useful exercise for writing tests. “Write a complete set of tests for this implementation and report on any bugs found.”

I read the Foundation trilogy over the last month or two, turns out I really didn’t remember it well, has to have been well over 30 years since I first read these.

overall I felt kinda meh about it, like maybe the time period when people should read this has ended

@regehr Yeah the Foundation series as a whole — especially including the 4th and 5th books — is kind of meh. The first book (which is actually five novellas) is my favorite though.
