I’ve had a favourite author for more than 20 years. I really didn’t like their second-last book — after loving everything else they’d ever written.

I’ve never reviewed or even named that book publicly (nor will I now). And I unhesitatingly bought their next book (which I still haven’t read).

this whole OpenAI/Scarlett Johansson thing really boils down to… a man who thought he could take what he wanted from a woman even after she clearly said no.

An ad agency I was once associated with ran radio ads in the early 2000s that used a Donald Sutherland sound-alike — and he was really good. Some voice-over guy in Toronto or Vancouver who basically made a living doing this impersonation.

Not sure what made me think about that. 🧐

Is it "unjust" and "mean" to not let Pica lick (but not even eat) my mozzarella sicks?

Facts:

  1. She has done this before
  2. She won't even eat them, just mouth them.
  3. She has a strong opinion about doing this.

I needed to finish my lunch before paying attention to this call, so I would like to thank the gentleman who felt he needed to preface his comment with a brief background beginning somewhere around the Bronze Age.

@petersforbes there was a history prof at my alma mater who — for years — taught a course called Europe Between the World Wars. It was the talk of campus any year he made it to 1900 before the end of term.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog @hannu_ikonen “Does not perform content moderation” unless you do something like checks notes watch a movie or TV show — which it won’t record because their partners’ DRM is more important than what their so-called customers want.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@_L1vY_ @GossiTheDog @hannu_ikonen oh, I would expect it to record solid black where the Netflix content is — everything else would still get recorded.

I’d also expect them to take note of what you were watching in Netflix. You pervert. ;)

@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@_L1vY_ @GossiTheDog @hannu_ikonen For what it’s worth, macOS doesn’t let you screen-grab DRM’d content, either. This is all likely as a result of some ancient agreement between TV/Hollywood publishers and anyone selling DVD/Blu-Ray drives or running streaming service apps.

Not that this stops anyone.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@_L1vY_ @GossiTheDog @hannu_ikonen About Netflix? See Rule 34.

On Netflix? Also see Rule 34.

You pervert. 🤣

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@_L1vY_ @GossiTheDog @hannu_ikonen Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+ — none of them do adult content. It’s stated clearly on the Wikipedia entry, though: Rule 34 has no exceptions! 🙃

a friend — whom I’ve known 30 years — recently pulled me (back) into WhatsApp. She has a Mac & an iPad, but video chat with her granddaughter happens on WhatsApp; there are no Meta-is-evil arguments more powerful than that.

It immediately requested full access to my contacts, which I denied, explicitly to be uploaded to Meta’s servers.

Apple should disallow this. People have the right to share their own info with Meta (et al) — they do NOT have the right to share other people’s.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@Starfia some care about keeping their age private; others don’t. and that can change over time, in both directions. also, someone knowing when I was born doesn’t mean I shared that with them or that I’d be ok with them sharing it, especially if they do so publicly/broadly. making presumptions at all feels like a slippery slope. ;) friendships can be complex & ever-changing.

that your app kept this calculation on-device seems to me to eliminate most reasonable objections to it.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@Starfia @raganwald at first glance, yes.

then I think of how algorithms love to recommend following people. overlapping “anonymized” data points are more than sufficient, right? throwing people under the bus to maximize engagement is pretty much the default position.

sure, social network maps can be enough for this, but so can actual maps. and area codes & postal codes. and email domains (think regional ISP accounts).

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@Starfia I’m sure that Very Smart, Ethical People™ (zero sarcasm here) at Apple and Google have already thought about these issues, and I’m just a lowly web designer that has literally no voice on these issues, but I do think about these things.

¯_(ツ)_/¯
