Simon Tatham’s Puzzle Collection. Just a bunch of cool puzzles for wasting time. No ads or bells and whistles.

You can download them or just play in the browser. Someone also made the collection into an Android app, which I usually use.

What are some physics-based arguments against hard determinism?

I don’t believe free will is real. I’m not a deep physics person (and relatively bad at math), but with my undergrad understanding of chemistry, classical mechanics, and electromagnetism, it seems most rational that we are creatures entirely controlled by our environments and what we ingest and inhale....

tau,

But does it really matter if it’s possible for us to make such predictions? If a hypothetical omniscient observer (i.e. Laplace’s demon) could predict all your decisions, then that already shows that they’re deterministic. Us not being able to actually do the determination wouldn’t change the fact that there is a definitive state of the universe for any point in time.

Why does “come here” bother me so much?

Ok, I have no idea why this bothers me and I don’t even know what to call it. My husband is a “come here” guy. Something he thinks is interesting and wants to show me - hey, come here! Nuclear apocalypse - hey, come here! Why the hell wont he just tell me why he wants me to get up, trudge to wherever he is, so that he can...

tau, (edited )

What would annoy me about it at least, is the implication that whatever you’re currently doing doesn’t matter at all. To him, whatever is currently on his mind takes precedence over anything you could possibly be doing at the same time. He doesn’t even think about how important or relevant to you the thing is that he wants to show you, because he doesn’t value your time the same as his. You’re supposed to just drop everything and do as you’re told.

Not telling you what it’s about also increases the sense of urgency (the implication being that there’s no time to explain; the bird could be gone from the windowsill or the kid could have fallen out of the window) while at the same time making it harder to make an informed decision about actually hurrying over or refusing. If you’d ask for an explanation, it might already be too late after all.

tau,

am I correct in feeling wary of using this from a security standpoint

I don’t really think you have to be worried about security. Without an official API I’d be more worried about stability and potential data loss due to e.g. bugs in the encryption implementation or unexpected API changes though.

this is asking you to put in your Proton username and password and 2FA and it gets stored as a token in the config file.

As far as I can tell it’s just using your username and password to obtain an access token just like any other Proton Drive client, including the offical one, would have to do.

tau,

It is (or can be) just as secure as a non-mnemonic passcode. The mnemonic aspect just helps with typing it out without errors.

You’re not really supposed to remember the mnemonic passcode, but save it in your password manager and/or print it out and store it in a secure location.

Now if you need to use your printed out mnemonic passcode, you just have to type in a bunch of normal words instead of a very long list of random characters and symbols, where it’s easy to make mistakes.

Bitwarden/Vaultwarden equivalent or third party LastPass-like password changer?

Bitwarden/vaultwarden, as much as I love it, still doesn’t let you easily sort by date modified – and I realized recently I have hundreds of old accounts still knocking around my vault. I’d like to automatically change those passwords (or even mass delete older accounts) but the prospect of doing so manually has stopped me...

tau,

I think they they stopped reading after your first sentence and are suggesting KeePass as a password manager that lets you sort by date modified.

Wem auf Mastodon folgen? German

tau,

Guck dir mal FollowGraph an.

tau,

I suppose free ones, new generic TLDs that aren’t owned by some trustworthy company or organization that will probably continue to exist for the forseeable future, and country code TLDs from countries without stable governments or a reputable institution managing the TLD.

tau,

Not a fan of reflinking (as you do with the VPS link) without at least acknowledging that you’re profiting when people use it.

tau,

it’s direct support for all services including the server for admin.social

Sounds like there’s no reason not to be transparent about it then.

tau,

I tested it a bit a few months back, when the trial was still a bit more generous. Results are generally good (often better, but sometimes worse than Google’s) and the custom filtering/weighting of search results is really cool. That said, for me the difference isn’t nearly large enough to justify the price compared to just continuing to use Google with uBlock Origin. Especially considering a big part of their costs are third party API integrations for AI summarization, weather, maps etc (IIRC from some of their comments on HN), most of which I don’t actually need or want. Maybe if I could pay like $3-5 without having to worry about going over some search limit and suddenly having to pay per search…

tau,

By default, if there are no submissions, it will […] set a screenshot from a random timestamp as the thumbnail.

Would it be possible to extract the most watched position from the watch graph in the seek bar or use positions that were already tagged as highlights in sponsorblock for better defaults?

tau,

adblocker, sponsorblock and this

I’d even add Unhook (hide Trending, Shorts, Merch, replace “Home Feed” with subscriptions etc.) and Age Restriction Bypass (avoid the need to verify your account with a credit card). I also use Clickbait Remover. It essentially does the same as DeArrow without the crowdsourcing, which is already good enough for me.

tau, (edited )

Haven’t used it myself and it seems to be in relatively early development, but Movary might be worth a look then.

Edit: An alternative that is not open source, but still privacy respecting and a bit more featureful might be rate.house:

Sounds like it would make things like surgery with general anesthesia impossible though.

Edit: Now that I think about it, wouldn’t 4 be better since it makes you functionally immortal? Dying from old age just means dying due to some of those health conditions (heart disease, cancer etc.) that get more and more likely the older you get. If you can’t get those, you don’t die of old age.

Also 3 API requests pro Kommentar.

<pre style="background-color:#ffffff;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Kommentar: "{Kommentar}"
</span>
