I create software for fun and profit. I'm an amateur urban designer (i.e. I play City Skylines and follow Strong Towns). I live in Dallas, and truly love my city. I like to read history and science fiction. I do my best to follow the teachings and example of Jesus. I once made a web based HyperCard clone.

I got into professional software development in the early 2000s. At the time Java and .NET were kings. Ive since learned that Smalltalk was a serious contender in the 90s. My question is, what happened?

Was there something about the Smalltalk language or runtime that made it a poor choice for business software, or did Sun and Microsoft just have better marketing?

Really wish MS would open source qbasic already

@eniko I met someone the other day who is working on a modern, faithful recreation of Qbasic. He even bought the domain: https://qbasic.com

Hypothetically, if I were to order a run of Graphics Gremlins (https://github.com/yeokm1/graphics-gremlin-hdmi) fully assembled, would anyone be interested in splitting the cost?

Picked this up yesterday at the meetup. I guess it’s time to install Linux 😜

@RL_Dane I’m planning on it

Apparently it was possible to do a "CD-ROM” install of which would install a minimal system to the hard disk, and run most of the system from the CD. I wonder if anyone actually ran their system like this.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@cenbe I think my first one was Slackware 3.1 (aka Slackware96). I’ve still use Slackware as my main Linux workstation. It's amazing how little has changed as it has kept up with the modern versions of everything.

@RL_Dane I first learned about Twitter from listening to TWiT.

Cranky opinion: Notification systems make sense on phones, but have never made sense on desktop/laptop computers. I feel like I basically never get a notification on a desktop unless it's either some kind of ad or just the OS vendor deciding to annoy me.

Even on Linux, the notification system finds ways to show me ads for… other parts of Linux?

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I remember installing an app on OSX years ago to add notifications. Back then, i was excited to get messages.

Now it’s just a junk drawer that I have to clean out every day.

I've seen people advise against using PCB auto routing. Is that advice still valid? Are their other constraints to that advice?

For context, I’m laying out and routing my first ever PCB in KiCad. It’s a 6502 system on a Z50Bus card. The Freerouting plug-in seems to do a decent job, but I realize there's a lot I don't know.

Bible verses are much funnier to read if you end them with "- for $8 a month."

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life -for $8 a month."

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@1dalm Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit for 8 dollars a month”

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@1dalm choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, … But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord for $8 a month.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@1dalm

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well for $8 a month.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

@1dalm I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord for $8 a month.

tedchoward,

@1dalm Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven for $8 a month.

Today is a good day to make chili.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

We begin with onions, poblano pepper, and garlic.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

As this is Texas chili, we add beef.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

Lookin’ good

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

Time to add the dry seasoning.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

Now we mix in tomato paste.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

Starting to look like chili.

tedchoward,
@tedchoward@mastodon.social avatar

After adding chicken stock and some salsa, there’s nothing to do but let it simmer.
