So just made an agreement with... the predatory publisher

I know not everyone liked it but I was actually finding ResearchGate quite useful. Now this is completely trashing the little reputation they had left in the toilet. MDPI might have a few good journals but it is overall famously known for its predatory practices like not listening to the reviewers and not having enough time for proper review between submission and publication.

This is a really disappointing move from ResearchGate that's really not in their interest. I guess they got a big check for it? Makes you wonder what other unscientific content are they getting paid to promote.

I'm going to write to them (e.g. press@researchgate.net) to ask that they cut all ties with MDPI and any other predatory publishers. I hope that many users will complain too. If it has no effect, I'll just have to close my account and never go there again...

"MDPI’s commitment to delivering a high-quality service for our authors"

I guess you could say that not having proper peer-review is a service to the authors in a way?? 🤔

thartbm,

@brembs @elduvelle Your findings might be important to others (esp. new medical/applicable findings) but hidden, and its paid for with (wasted) tax money. So it harms the same people that can't access and pay for publication in glossies?

thartbm,

@elduvelle Sorry for not being clear... but yes, that's the harm. Second point is that to some degree that's the same harm that is done when publishing in pay walled journals... notwithstanding some differences between the two.

thartbm,

@elduvelle Also: good morning! ☀️

thartbm,

@Etche_homo @brembs @elduvelle I wonder if there is work comparing the quality / replicability of papers in shady, semi-predatory journals with middle-of-the-road journals? Are they as bad as glossies or worse?

The surprisingly usable app is showing yet again how we always overlook the need for social tooling in everything. Absolutely impossible to make heads or tails of this conference, I want to know what my friends are interested in, be able to share what things ill be at, etc. Wish I had an extra week to build this into neuromatchstodon bc the app does iCal exports, and also points to need for off-road interop tools to be able to eg. scrape websites for metadata/do a live update from an app even if it doesnt support it.

As usual I am like "this is all very cool but whats the point if its impossible to make sense of together"

thartbm,

@jonny I'm also surprised that the abstract and virtual component uploads are not at all integrated into the website... or, let's say easy to find. Or, I'm wondering why you have to use two different website to 1) upload your own virtual component, and 2) to see other people's virtual components. What's the point if it's all hidden / disconnected?

When I open the website, I expect to see 1) an interface to register, and to upload my abstract 2) the program, and 3) the virtual stuff... It's not right there. You can scroll down to find one of them... why not at the top? And the other two are only accessible through links that were sent by email. Or maybe you can now also find some of it on the website. Very confusing...

thartbm,

@jonny App is pretty decent! Correct sorting of all authors at least. ;)

My thanks to everyone who actually uploaded their poster, at least us at home get some sense of what's going on.

Early access to my for where we further prod the spatial and temporal limits of frame induced position shifts:

"Frame effects in space and time"

https://youtube.com/watch?v=aI8rsW-Ev34&si=iZqY0IyubCoFgScp

We see that the frame effect is somewhat limited in space and very much in time. We also see that it does not get weaker with long exposure to it. Does that mean it's a very basic way we incorporate moving reference frames into perception of position?

Let me know what you think!

One thing I feel is a shame about Baldur's Gate 3 is how short sub-plots are. I just met some very interesting-looking mad medical types, threw two dice and that's it. Donezo. And a lot is like that - there's very little extension to sub-quests where you get to "live" in some bit of the world, it's just jumping from peaks to peaks. Maybe an overreaction to filler quests.

thartbm,

@TEG Not sure if you're familiar with any of the non computer game stuff for Forgotten Realms, but I assume they have lots of stuff from ~26 years or so that all sorts of stuff was published for that world in BG3... for fans, but also to make the place seem bigger / feel more coherent? I saw a Minsc and Boo statue, but that's not what I mean... also cool though.

thartbm,

@TEG Also, it seems like it might tie in with the new Phandelver and Below book in some way, which in turn ties in to other recent material. Anyway, just a guess from the sidelines... I feel buying/playing BG3 would be dangerous for me. 😉

thartbm,

@TEG No hitting people with sticks anymore since I left NL 😂 Took up jogging instead in Germany with someone else, and trying to keep it up here. My oldest is now doing Tae Kwondo, and they like D&D too!

Dear Followers, as my last post for this , I'd like to learn a bit about you 😃
If you want, answer to this post with your favourite !
If you don't have a favourite video game (..👀), answer with anything else!

(I know... picking one only might be difficult... I'll start: Planescape https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planescape:_Torment, the best ever!)

thartbm,

@elduvelle as a kid there were a bunch of C64 games, but I think I spent most time with the original Baldur's Gate... love Planescape: Torment too!

The wildest #UniversityIT bullshit I've heard yet:

At a union meeting, talking with someone from a different department. IT revoked superuser privileges from all their work computers so they have to submit a ticket EVERY TIME they want to sudo. They said they have an outstanding ticket to install adobe reader, and in the meantime they CAN'T OPEN PDFs.

usually when I try to talk about how digital #infrastructure impacts every part of our working conditions I'm talking about larger problems like how the deinfrastructuring of our communication systems makes it so publishers become the only venue for our work, which structures our incentive systems and patterns of work from top to bottom. This is way beyond that tho, the very basic ability for information workers to interact with information at all.

thartbm,

@jonny @elduvelle Same, it's the first thing I do. Even though I know some people in IT, it took a bit of effort last time, coz it's made harder for them as well.

question (or just really): I want some goodness of fit thing for an orthogonal distance regression (or total least squares regression). Since this can apparently be done by taking the first principle component (https://stats.stackexchange.com/questions/13152/how-to-perform-orthogonal-regression-total-least-squares-via-pca) we were thinking that Rsquared = 1 - ((sum(eigenvalues)-max(eigenvalues) / max(eigenvalues)) but we're not sure.

Apparently we could also get a t-statistic or a chi-squared value: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/21395328/how-to-estimate-goodness-of-fit-using-scipy-odr

Does anyone have any opinions about this? @lakens maybe?
