Civil liberties, geekery, politics, YA/SF books, tasty vegan food, family life, #NerdCryptic. Yes I do have a beagle, his name's Calcifer, and he'd really like to sniff you while you pat him. #nztwits

Four day weekend with beautiful weather.

My back: oh no you don't.

Enough amateur efforts, time for expert advice.

Awww, the 12yo told me that when they were young, they thought the change jar on my dressing table was all the money we had. The family fortune. 😂💰

Do you know what's fantastic? /s

When you order vegan food and get to have the pleasure to live out all the symptoms of your lactose intolerance the next day.

Shouldn't they have a bit more control over their food preparation process when it comes to allergens?

If I had ordered meat and it had soya in it somewhere, the shop would probably have closed already... Don't fuck with the carnivores, right!? But vegans? They'll be fine. Oh they're vegan for health reasons too? Too bad. A bit milk won't hurt, right!? RIGHT!?

I hate that. Nowadays you can only really order from purely vegan shops if you want to be sure that you won't have any problems afterwards.

@kaiserkiwi Oh wow, that's really shitty.

I'm even judging myself for listening to a Café del Mar playlist but it's really just the thing for sitting on the deck with a drink and listening to the rain.

@dave Kind of surprising they didn't keep Lighting port in the rest of the world and only use USBC in Europe.

I don't have any problems with the fact that computer programs keep getting larger and systems keep growing in memory and storage requirements, but I find it really damn annoying that they're getting slower and slower (yes I understand there's a connection).

I didn't have to put up with this laggy mess in the 90s and I don't see why I should have to up with it now.

Seeing how well the 12yo gets on with the other kids at the home schooling camp compared to at school reveals something about what we commonly refer to as socialisation. Maybe it's more about conforming with NZ school culture than building core social skills.

You know that movie scene where the hero walks away while the bad guys die in a huge explosion behind him?

I just acted it out in real life. Except it was a crowd of kids playing cards, and the explosion was the bowl of wasabi peas I gave them. 💥😂

RIP Terry Bisson. Here is one of his most famous stories, the excellent “Bears Discover Fire."

I just re-read the story. It’s very short and simple on the surface, with a lot going on underneath that I don’t quite understand. At some point, I might Google until I find an analysis—or, even better, try to figure it out on my own. But for now, I’ll just appreciate the story.

He also wrote the short story “They’re Made Out of Meat.” He ... https://mitchw.blog/2024/01/12/rip-terry-bisson.html

Here's a link to the very short story for anyone else who would like to read it too: https://www.mit.edu/people/dpolicar/writing/prose/text/thinkingMeat.html

@bananabob enshittification - Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

Stoked to read about plans for a 'super bird sanctuary' in my part of the world, enough to shift the threat status of whole bird species. The 40k hectares of forest cited is some of my favourite bush. Know those hills well.

And now I also have to figure out what to add to the new stocking. At 8pm on Christmas Eve. (Clearly, I only have myself to blame for all this.)
