This Quote from the Aeneid is really interesting. Basically Virgil is calling on the Muses to give him the inspiration to fill the gaps in his historical sources. Because his sources don't cover everything he wants to do in his poem he's requesting aid from goddesses who can remember. This might be an artist winking at the audience while admitting that he's making a lot of this up, or it might be an example of seeking inspiration, or personal gnosis from a divine source.

Do you consider activism to be part of your Pagan practice?

tierfreund,
@tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

@Cat_LeFey I guess I'm not really sure. I am pretty active in the ism in my town, and I definitely connect the gods to that part of my life, but maybe it depends on how you define practice. Activism is certainly part of my pagan life in the same way that art and work and family relationships are.

Does food from the 1950s have a weird reputation because we were transitioning from an agrarian to an industrialized and mass production Society as industrialization caught up with the food supply chain?

This post brought to you by food history YouTube

tierfreund,
@tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

@Crazypedia I think there was a lot of disruption to food culture caused by the war. suburbanization and a booming mechanized economy definitely factors too though.

I've always said that us Pagans are a well-read bunch, and I think that's really cool. However, all those ‘required reading’ lists can be a huge barrier to newcomers. One shouldn't have to read 10-15 books, including difficult ancient manuscripts, just to be a Pagan.

In the US, 54% of adults read below a 6th grade level (About 12 years old). 46% of Americans didn't read a single book last year. Not everyone is literate, and our community should be inclusive of that.

tierfreund,
@tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

@Cat_LeFey I think this is right. There shouldn't be a lot of required reading, and we shouldn't be relying on ancient and medieval sources as ultimate authorities. I think some of this comes as a substitute for real community. Because we're so spread out it's easier to recommend books than it is to engage in productive trust based discourse.

    @lannan @theology ooooh. That's a fun take. Can you elaborate?

    tierfreund, to random
    @tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

    Seeing all these arguments on til tok about what "the gods" think about personal relationships, politics, etc. and I'm just thinking: there's more than one god! The point of polytheism is that there are more than one of them. If they all felt the same way about everything what would be the point of polytheism?

    tierfreund,
    @tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

    @Malleus that's definitely a likely factor. Can never discount the influence of neoplatonism. The other idea I've heard (from others on TikTok) is that it's about folks distancing themselves from the evangelical notion of the personal relationship with Christ.

    tierfreund,
    @tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

    @Julian_Invictus I've heard the idea that it's an overcorrection based on rejecting anything that reminds us of evangelical Christianity. Which is a pretty understandable motivation, even if I think the conclusions are too sweeping to be easily compatible with polytheism as I understand it

    Question for Pagans: what do you think of the many worlds theory from physics (the idea that all possibilities in uncertain quantum situations occur and that they split the timeline by doing so) ? Does it conflict with your theology? Does it matter?

    tierfreund,

    @JennyBrown I agree with this. whether it's the only timeline or one of many, our history is the history providence has given us

    When you consider the Christian elements of Christmas, which is closer to your attitude?

    For fun, I'm comparing results to this poll asking Christians how they feel about Halloween: https://news.lifeway.com/2015/10/26/lifeway-research-halloween-2015/#:~:text=Religious%20differences&text=Christians%20aren't%20far%20off,23%20percent%20avoid%20it%20completely.

    As a , I have a lot of thoughts about the whole Thor/Loki situation in pop culture.
    It's like a chicken-and-egg thing: Did they become more popular and change slightly because of the Marvel movies? Or were they more active/changing in this realm and that's why the movie characters were made in the first place?

    I have a hard time believing that they (mostly Loki) didn't have a hand in their current popularity.
    As a result, the entire pantheon is experiencing a resurgence, and isn't that just something that Loki would do? To play a trick, teasing the gods by making them depicted as silly superheroes, but it all turns out in their favor in the end?

    tierfreund,
    @tierfreund@pagan.plus avatar

    @Cat_LeFey I don't think Marvel, Disney or Snorri for that matter have any effect on the nature of the gods, but their work informs the types of relationships that humans attempt to form with the gods, and That can cause the gods to change. On the other side of it I guess you're asking if Stan Lee was a divinely inspired poet? I think that's likely, but it's hard to say what his work is actually representing. Might be entirely different entities with different characteristics but just the same name, or not.

    The Gods are ends in themselves, no promise either of earthly success or eternal life is necessary to make them worthy of respect. There is no hierarchy in the universe, no being fundamentally "deserves" or "doesn't deserve" worship, because moral categories are socially emergent. Ultimately the category of "God" is a social relation between two beings.

    In the City of God, Augustine goes on and on about how only the god who made the world and promises eternal life is "worthy" of worship and it's like, why? The only people who should be worshipping Jesus are people who have an edifying relationship either with him as a god, with one of his saints or with his church. Eternal life and his identification with the logos or the demiurge or whatever don't enter into it.

    Deity is not a means to an end!

    Does anyone else have (seemingly?) spontaneous superstitions about plastic? I can help but feel like it's inappropriate to put an image of the divine, incense, or really anything that I've used for a spiritual purpose in a plastic container. It could be a prejudice based on ideas of organic vs processed materials that I was raised with. Still not going to store spiritual items in plastic bins though.
