Many people believe that monotheism is inevitable - I actually believe is inevitable.

The idea that the historical trend toward "oneness" is a theological event horizon in every religion doesn't make sense to me. Its plurality that's the ultimate state of existence and prior to creation: creation exists at the moment that a second thing comes into being in order to interact with the first, and no sooner.

So bc non-existence can't really exist, what does exist MUST be multiple.

Missing from this vanilla article about "" in the UK armed forces are any mentions of the fact that all of these faiths are rooted in , and are adopted by looking for a way to hide their hateful ideals from the greater public. Clueless articles like this play the role of useful idiot. Whenever you hear about someone in the 21st century adopting paganism, it's almost always a white supremacist hiding in plain sight.

New word: testophobia.

Not sure if a term for this exists, but I propose it as a better replacement for misandry - basically, a reason both queers and women demonize and abuse testosterone takers/makers, the overblown or completely fabricated negative psychological side effects of having it in one's system, and the way it's scapegoated as the root of many societal ills. Also, the specific way trans men are dismissed in queer spaces.

Hail Freya, it's Friday! I'm back with a .

This week I'm asking about your conversion to Paganism versus where you started, in general terms.

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Cat_LeFey "Other to pagan" for me too - my parents didn't pick up religion again until they divorced, and boy was I along for the ride! My dad dragged me to Christian Science and protestant church while my mom tried a few different flavors of Christian before going back to Catholic and then giving up entirely.

Tell Me I'm Wrong: If private jets were banned and the rich people had to fly commercial, Airports and flying in general wouldn't suck nearly as much.

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@chris I think the airlines would team up with credit card companies and airport security to create a luxury experience completely separate from the masses anyways. Airport lounges with their own entrances, biometric "security", and an assortment of planes to choose from. It would just be a charter service.

If a person tells you that it's harder to be trans now than it was 20 years ago due to visibility efforts, you can put money on that being a dogwhistle that actually means "the explosion of nonbinary and gender-noncoforming identities make me feel just as anxious as my existence makes cis people feel."

It's internalized transphobia.

Stop it.

Orthopraxy has almost zero utility in a socially isolated polytheist's practice.

There, I said it.

@theology

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@tierfreund @theology IME, when people talk orthopraxy, they're referring to historical precedent - nobody will say that eclectic, DIY polytheists have an orthopraxic personal religion even if they've arrived at a set ritual schedule.

As well - what reason does the lone polytheist actually have to create and maintain a religious practice, all on their own, if they don't actually believe in what they're doing?

The utility of right action is limited to community and group worship -

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@tierfreund @theology - it's for signaling to your coreligionists that you're in the same headspace, that you'll follow the prescribed ritual maneuvers, and that you're committed to arriving at the same gnosis, that you respect the tradition.

Because we all know that the Gods can be reached and pleased outside of that.

Hail Freya, it's Friday!

Most pagans celebrate the cycle of the seasons. The thing about circles is that they don't really have an end/beginning, so everyone has their own idea on when a new cycle begins for them.

What day do you consider the seasonal ‘New Year’ in your practice?

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Cat_LeFey I don't follow the european WotY - my new year is in March, shortly after the spring equinox. :)

It is literally impossible to be an expert in everything relating to and/or . The umbrella is too broad. So after the initiate stage, we tend to settle into a few niches.

I think this is a great humbling and equalizing factor within the community. We are all novices at something, and it's possible to find experts in all kinds of specific fields of study.

Here's my :

Expert- regional plant life, tarot
Intermediate- astrology
Novice- Greek pantheon and mythology

What are yours?

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Cat_LeFey The more I learn and grow, the more I realize that I'm not an expert on anything. I'm not even an expert on my own personal experiences with the Gods!

I call myself a novice* contemplative and mystic, a sacred artist, and I think I'm happy to be able to even say that much. :)

*"Novice" here actually means something I should say - novice monastics are those in-training who have not yet taken vows.

I wrote this (https://tinyurl.com/aztecexceptionalism) blog post a while ago now, and it's more pertinent than I could have ever imagined.

A religious colleague of mine told me today that he had once emailed James Maffie, asking if his 500-page tome, "Aztec Philosophy" was meant to be a definitive work of historical scholarship or speculative conjecture - and Maffie admitted it was the latter.

I am without words, because he said nothing to this effect anywhere in the book... /

I am working on ridding myself of the part of my mind that has been so poisoned by "hustle-culture" and all that nonsense that leads to me being ashamed of those creative or artistic endeavors that do not end up earning any money (or have no potential for it).

Stopped me from writing for years. Kept me from indulging in story telling and even reading.

Dear what are your strategies for dealing with such a horrid mindset?

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Imperor My first step was to get rid of all my mainstream social media - sharing art on places like IG, FB, Twitter all pressure you to maximize eyeballs and game the algorithms, which in itself is a hustle and a lot of work. The segue to "I should try compensating myself for my time" is sinister and organic. Next you try putting a Patreon or Substack together, since you're "content creating" already, why not monetize it? But oops, that turns into a part-time job too and you're pressured to /

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Imperor keep up with the relentless pace of the attention economy treadmill. Meanwhile, you fall further and further down the sunk cost hole until one day you wake up burned out and completely muse-less.

For me, "getting out" meant taking a very hard look at who my ideal audience was. Without asking that question, we assume our audience is "the internet" and we break ourselves trying to constantly reach new and more people. That's unsustainable for most of us. /

lannan,
@lannan@mas.to avatar

@Imperor Who do you actually want seeing and enjoying your work? A specific community? Your circle of friends? Mastodon followers? Whoever organically finds you on [art platform] without you needing to do [marketing hustle]?

Once I figured out who I was really making art for, the rest fell into place. I don't make art for everyone - I make art for me, my small online following, my family and friends, my Gods and spirits. The rest is a bumper crop that I don't rely on for motivation.
