The Utopian UI Architect : An ex-Apple interface designer’s — Bret Victor's 40-year plan to redesign not just the way we use computers, but the way we think with them

https://medium.com/re-form/the-utopian-ui-architect-34dead42a28

“We have these things called computers, and we’re basically just using them as really fast paper emulators,” he says.

@impactology what’s this an example of?

Reading starforged it’s interesting that in a game where everything is random, from the core principles of the setting to what you had for lunch, chargen isn’t.

Not all religions and doctrines are equal but a lot of nerds like to play “god poker” where they like to pretend Druidism or the Norse or Greek gods are way better than Christianity and it’s cheap and lazy.

I used to review titterpigs on twitter but I guess I can do it here? Except no because mastodon doesn’t do long threads.

I suppose my one other thought about Starforged is it really does prove GMs are superfluous; they really were just making it up the whole time.

The way nerds feel about Halloween makes me wish we had a holiday for other genres. Particularly porn. Oh porn day would be so great!

What would rpgs look if there was another verb instead of murder in murderhobo?

Theme gives meaning to mechanics; mechanics give weight to theme

No political discussion can happen without agreeing that this is true, that significant slices of the population can and do kill people for fun.

I set out to build an rpg for people who hate rpgs and I did it

Hey people if you’re giving your address and don’t list your country that’s a red flag to your clients that you don’t think internationally.

Sometimes I’m so bored of rpgs and I never got to be super famous at them. And now the next generation is here. But I’m bored because I’m good at it. I can do them well too easily. Every morning I am trying to figure out who the hell I am and if it matters at all. Lost from myself because I keep changing.

You can tell the board gaming market is tragically upper middle class and white because there’s literally a game coming out about charcuterie.

The tabletop gaming industry is a lot like the stand up comedy industry in that the gap between enthusiast and creator is very very small and easy to do, and theres a huge amount of support around taking that step. but the gap from there to professional or making money or being famous can be massive and may just not be possible. This is also relatively true of other things but writing a novel or learning to paint say feels much bigger at the first step.

Sometimes masking is not rocking or not talking so much or not stimming but it’s mot just that. Sometimes masking is not performing all of les miserables in the McDonald’s queue. Sometimes it’s not screaming “all of these are lies” in a book store. Sometimes it’s not tearing your enemies apart with your teeth. Sometimes it’s trying to stay sane when you feel like a 5 dimensional rhombus shattering through a two dimensional universe over and over but you’re supposed to act like a person.

Years and years ago I remember perusing a fantasy series set in an alt-earth in a sort of 19th century steampunk thing with the two great power blocs of Europe rattling their sabres ala pre ww1 except the blocs were like steampunk tech vs I think maybe anthropomorphic animals? The only thing I remember was the map in the front that divided Europe into something like “the clockwork empire” and “the beast alliance” or some such… can anyone help?

i'm probably the only one, but maybe i'm not. maybe there are lots of people who find new years as difficult as others find christmas or mothers day. You don't have to look forward to things, or look back at things if it hurts you. I'm with you in this.

I want to know why you gm. And how do you think about going about it. Why do you want to do it? What do you think in your head when you decide you want to gm? What are you looking forward to? What do you do first? What aspects of the rulebook do you look to to decide to run something and get started? So much of rpgs really are aimed at players yet it’s the gm who usually reads the game first!
