tobybencollaghduff,

If it means the end of overpaid talking heads then I’m all for it.

A new Silicon Valley manifesto reveals the bleak, dangerous philosophy driving the tech industry (theconversation.com)

We don’t have to look too deeply into history to find parallels to this kind of worldview. Simply put, it is the worldview of colonialism: it sees both nature and other people as domains to be conquered and exploited for “growth”.

tobybencollaghduff,

Thank you for sharing this. new thinking for me to explore.

tobybencollaghduff,

Is that a potholder or a yarmulke on his head?

tobybencollaghduff,

We collectively need to do something to secure the long-term future. My initial thought is to follow aspects of Craigslist - create a non-profit behemoth that has a virtual monopoly on the infrastructure, so it cannot be displaced by a for-profit entity. No one can challenge Craigslist’s hold on “electronic classified ads” because 1 ) network affects 2) they can’t be undercut on price while still creating an “economic surplus” ie profits for someone else. Maybe this proposed organization could charge a small subscription fee for power users or something like that.

tobybencollaghduff,

What do people think about scraping Reddit for some specific content and rehosting it over here on Lemmy? For example the stories from r/BestofRedditorUpdates. It would make Lemmy feel more like home and add much needed content.

tobybencollaghduff,

I just don’t understand the thought process. They could’ve just shelled out $10M for Apollo and made that the official Reddit app. Then give users the choice of ads or pay for ad free experience.

so basically they’re making a massive gamble that most people will just switch over to their garbage app. Maybe they will, but for sure the power users, big sub moderators & regular posters are all coming to Lemmy. You know, all the people that made Reddit worth visiting.

Personally I think this will be the end of Reddit.

tobybencollaghduff,

Memmy. Seems like the best iOS option. Glad to have it! Long live Apollo.

tobybencollaghduff,

I would also mod if you want.

tobybencollaghduff,

That seems like the easiest way to set it up. I’m ok with whatever the group decides though.

tobybencollaghduff,

I’m game! Disclaimer: have been on lemmy < 24 hrs :) 10+ yr redditor.-

tobybencollaghduff,

joined lemmy 10 minutes ago. this is my first comment. reddit user for 10+ years. I was 99% mobile (iPhone - Apollo) on reddit, and I very much want to continue that on lemmy.
