There should be some kind of punishment for knowingly arresting people you can’t charge with a crime. This has happened at numerous protests for years, dozens of people arrested, released without a single charge.
Isn’t false imprisonment or abduction a crime? The police use this as a disruption tactic, they don’t care about the likelihood of actual charges.
True that. There have been successful lawsuits for obstruction of first amendment rights for similar actions but I’m sure most people wouldn’t go through the trouble of that, or have the means to.
I could be misremembering the details, but I read about a case of a cop wrongfully arresting a Black Panther member in the 60s or 70s, his friend shot the cop, and his charges were dropped because it was determined to be self-defense. I think the cop was plain-clothes which would have made a difference I’m sure, but I can’t imagine that happening today in any US court.
I have noticed when I’ve seen protests with armed groups involved, even just a handful of John Brown Gun Club members for example, the police are much less willing to mass arrest or escalate, for obvious reason. Though I think the student protests in this instance are going for optics of peace and non-violence so they probably don’t want that.
National Guard units shot and killed four student protesters in Ohio at Kent State University in 1970, wounding nine others. I’ve read the police used excuses like they had intel there were communist agitators involved, funnily similar to what they say today.
Many police department don’t report the deaths of people due to their actions or in their custody to any sort of national database as well, so estimates are likely undercounting. Corruption is rampant in departments as well, there have been cases of people dying and being buried by police without informing the family or anyone else.
So it’s likely much worse than we realize. Many murders are unsolved, there are many missing people cases also unsolved. In 2020, there were dozens of people reported missing that were involved in protests that were never found.
They have found many bodies wrapped in plastic, contrary to any normal practice, sometimes with medical devices like catheters still attached. Some people may have been buried alive.
I believe the words of the dozens of doctors and independent aid workers, the footage of atrocities, the long history of atrocities, more than the words of the people killing them (IDF propaganda). It’s not like this is the 1700s and there are no photos or direct evidence.
A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.
Hamas has been given millions of dollars by Israel over the years while any other potential political group has been surpressed. Without Israel they may actually have a chance at forming alternative groups. There is already the blood of nearly 40,000 Palestinians on our hands.
What does it matter if they have other political motives? The world is enabling their utter annihilation, children, babies, innocent people with no political ambition. That must be stopped before we wring our hands about what they might do with freedom. They are human beings, people with lives and families, not wild rabid animals.
I guess you haven’t met the defense contrators, weapons manufacturers and politicians who are rich because of wars and genocide. I haven’t personally met many of them either, average people don’t associate with those types.
True, I don’t think pragmatic people in the arms industry would push for genocide, a more drawn out, even conflict would be better for their profits probably. But if there is one they can make money on they will, even if one side is eradicated and the fighting stops there are always other conflicts.
In the example of Israel, if they succeed in eradicating their current target (Palestine) there will be more enemies for them to fight, so they would still be a valuable client of Lockheed Martin et al.
You can look through the history of statements by the average Israeli politicians, military officials and pundits to get a sense of their goal, it can be deduced by their actions but they been more or less open about it for years. The political history of and statements by the Israeli minister of national security Itamar Ben-Gvir is a good example of the general zeitgeist of the political bloc in power in Israel.
Last I was on Twitter a couple years ago there were antifascist pages that did that, the ones I followed were banned while the fascist ‘antifa watch’ pages I’ve seen are promoted. But I agree, Twitter won’t work for it anymore but we should have some kind of fascist watchlist.
I’ve thought about the deck of cards of terror suspects the US had, with higher members of Al Qaeda or whatever, we should have that for the top fascist politicians and war mongers. It should be well known the names and faces of the people pushing us off the cliff.
There’s a Star Trek ds9 episode where a non-human alien gets sent back in time to 1947. They discover on their sensors the radiation from the continual nuclear bomb tests and are horrified that the humans would irradiate their own planet. I just recently became a ‘trekkie’ and I get it, it really has some of the best themes and plots in sci-fi
That’s the one, I personally dislike even the smallest of spoiler so I was being vague haha. I enjoyed it though, I never watched any Trek at all before this and I’m so hooked lol.
I haven’t seen the original yet but the DS9 version of that episode was great, I was impressed they even used old style lenses and film to recreate the style of the 60s episode. It also made me realize “huh, William Shatner is kinda hot isn’t he?” Ahah. I’ll watch the original series eventually, I have a lot to catch up on lol.
I agree with what you’re saying, though It can be difficult to tell from the outside how much help a person needs. I ‘act’ normal and feel like I have to pretend to be someone else, most people would probably assume I’m ‘normal’, this can make things complicated for friends and family that don’t see the level of internal struggle. Especially when my brain tells me I must not be seen as abnormal, I must do everything I can to maintain the image of being normal.
I agree with you, there isn’t truly a ‘normal person,’ we all do suffer from the affliction of life and having an intellect. I also agree that we should embrace the odd differences, how boring would a homogenous world be?
What I’m referring to is different than difficult emotional states though, my brain interprets the world in different ways and I have different and more intense responses to stimuli. I’ve learned to cope with the emotional aspect, but it is difficult to put into words the way my brain operates and how that affects my action.
It feels like I’m trying to walk with no legs sometimes, if I was actually wheelchair bound it would be clear, but it isn’t even clear to me what is happening internally.
The war is about ending Hamas and destroying the tunnel system
That may have been arguable on Oct. 8th, but no one with eyes and a brain buys that anymore. It is a war of annihilation, they are destroying all of Gaza and crushing hopes of a Palestinian nation. The Israeli establishment has made it clear they don’t support a Palestinian state of any kind.
Even during this current escalation they have continued to annex land in the West Bank, what does that have to do with Hamas or tunnels?
The first election I voted in was a vote for the ‘lesser evil’. It’s been that way since. Maybe we could try, idk, a non-evil candidate? The evil has somehow grown steadily every time we’ve elected a ‘lesser evil’. Maybe there is something better we could do than legitimize evil. I’m not saying not vote, but clearly we need a rework of this whole thing.
