Eulogy for the Metaverse.

“The fact that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly stepped away from the Metaverse is a damning indictment of everyone who followed him, and anyone who still considers him a visionary tech leader.”

@ct_bergstrom @codinghorror Not aiming this at anyone specifically, but just some observations:

  1. It's weird that this article about the Metaverse mentions Tron and Second Life, but not the actual inspiration for it, the novel "Snow Crash."

  2. No one has yet built the Metaverse, at least as envisioned by Snow Crash and Neal Stephenson. Least of all Facebook.

  3. Neal is actually just recently getting involved in trying to lead the design of a metaverse framework https://www.wired.com/story/plaintext-neal-stephenson-named-the-metaverse-now-hes-building-it/

@howelloneill @codinghorror As someone that has managed communities for almost 30 years, I can summarize why not enough moderation happens:

    1. It's exhausting. You end up spending all your time moderating and explaining/arguing your actions with even well-meaning community members.

    2. It doesn't scale easily.

@codinghorror @howelloneill yeah definitely have been paying attention to what you did with SO and also doing now with Discourse. My issue is usually that I’m working on an extremely niche use case (professional automotive communities) and don’t usually have a lot of resources.

So it’s always a big battle to accomplish a lot with a little.

One thing that I think has definitely helped us is that we require everyone to use their real identity.

@codinghorror what do you think of the approach of using feedback (voting up/down) from all (trusted) users to automatically create a sane “default” view for everyone else (hiding overly negative or downvoted stuff), and then letting users adjust their defaults based on their pain thresholds?

I think it may work for our niche community, haven’t fully implemented yet though

Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

@paul @gruber You forgot the extremely hard 3rd option: an app that is simultaneously connected to both Bluesky and Mastodon and merges both timelines into one 🤣

AI execs’ big visit to the White House today makes me optimistic that the Biden Administration understands at least some of the risks of the industry’s exponential growth https://www.platformer.news/p/ai-visits-the-white-house

re-watched Her (2013) with the current chatGPT context and it hits even harder. 💗 Strong recommend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne6p6MfLBxc

@codinghorror Just did the same. Hardest part to accept was in the future they have advanced AI's and humans have jobs writing custom letters for people.
