@codinghorror I bought Rx inserts for Oculus Quest 2, they only cost $80. Not Zeiss glass, but still, hope they aren't anywhere near $500.

“A decent rule of thumb is that all cryptocurrency exchanges are doing crimes, and if you’re lucky your exchange is doing only process crimes.” https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2023-06-06/the-sec-comes-for-crypto

@codinghorror The Coinbase S-1 talked about staking 50+ times, the SEC approved their IPO, now they're suing Coinbase for ... staking? They tried to register to sell securities, the SEC won't even bother responding to these requests (according to Coinbase).

I think the SEC (or at least Gensler) is way off here.

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror Coinbase has been operating on a dual track: they want to be registered to sell securities so they can list cryptocurrencies that they feel ARE securities. They also already list all other cryptocurrencies that they feel are NOT securities. They've had a thorough set of criteria they use to try and distinguish.

All of this because the SEC won't go on the record with any of their logic, or any guidance on which are securities. They're they only exchange that has tried this hard…

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror E.g. this is the sum total of guidance from the SEC in recent years: https://decrypt.co/138334/gary-gensler-sec-ethereum-not-security-mit-2018

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror I don't follow ... make up the rules? What rules? They've been asking the US govt and the SEC for guidance for years. In response: a vacuum, save for random comments like Gensler saying Ethereum is NOT a security back in 2018 (see other post).

Coinbase moved forward in the vacuum trying to do their best not to list cryptocurrencies that they thought might be construed as securities: https://www.coinbase.com/blog/a-guide-to-listing-assets-on-coinbase

I spent about 30 minutes using/touring Vision Pro yesterday. Ask me anything.

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber 1. How would you compare the virtual computer screens with real life 4K and 5K screen resolution?

  1. Is there any internal battery so the thing will continue running as you switch battery packs or switch to plugging into the wall?

  2. How clear is the pass through video quality? This always sucked on Meta Quests.

The entire thing where there's a birthday party and the father is there wearing these things is NO, just NO, Hell NO!

Did no one stop and think? Why the hell would you put a video of that in a product announcement. I can't even.

Mark Gurman Recaps His Reporting on Apple's Upcoming XR Headset and He's Sticking With the Front-Facing Display for Googly Eyes

tomwinzig,

@provuejim @brianyap @daringfireball @gruber They already need inward cameras for gaze-tracking

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @provuejim @brianyap Not saying the front-facing googly eyes is gonna happen, but wouldn't infrared cameras work great?

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @provuejim @brianyap FaceID can literally change the realtime video so that your irises look like they're aimed at the camera (viewer). Colorizing or grayscaling an infrared image in realtime doesn't seem too hard, but again maybe they're going to use the visible light from the inward facing screens?

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar
tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @provuejim @brianyap The other thing about these inward facing cameras capturing your face is that Apple is likely to use all of this not (just?) for googly eye outward view, but for your avatar within VR.

In terms of photorealism, they could have you use your iPhone camera to capture a good high def 3D model of your face, and then use the internal sensors to fuse them into a realistic 3D avatar (regardless of whether they then display any of that on the exterior of the device).

tomwinzig,
@tomwinzig@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @provuejim @brianyap Yeah it does seem like a waste of battery life, but then again isn't the current rumor that you have to wear a fanny pack battery for this thing 😬

Also what if the front screen isn't a traditional retina screen, but something less intensive that just gives you "a hint" of their eyes/face, enough to make eye contact?
