Man, I need to find the people making adventure games that didn’t grow up playing them in the 80s/90s. I need to see what new ideas people are bringing to the genre

@MichaelKlamerus I feel like Outer Wilds was that, it felt like an adventure game made by platformer fans.

also I loved Sludge Life - I don't know if it counts as the genre or the makers would care, but it's the kind of chill, unrestricted free roaming and climbing experience that something like Uru made me want more of... personally I grew up on the Myst series but it's weird to me that anyone wants to make 2D games now, it seems like missing the point.

Been getting several DMs about the banner image in my profile. It's an old render (from 2010) of a recursive projected into a . This video shows the interplay of 2 conceptual hierarchies:

  1. Verlet particles with attractive/repulsive force fields are spawned in a squared 2d space and negotiate their positions over time. These positions are also used as sites for creating a dynamic Voronoi diagram to define cell structures around each particle. Each resulting Voronoi region can then become the physical (and constantly changing) bounds for the next level of recursion, spawning more particles to subdivide it into smaller regions. Each cell at each level is using its own Voronoi instance with sub-regions clipped to their respective parent region. The process becomes more and more local... The setup in the video has a maximum tree depth of 3.

  2. A quadtree is used to visualize the hierarchy of cells from phase 1 and its depth structure represented as extruded 3D model (in isometric perspective). For this video the quadtree has a depth of 10 levels with the maximum level of recursion tracing/coinciding with the Voronoi cell edges. The elevation of cell walls depends on the depth of the cell in the original tree, with the cells at deepest level resulting in the tallest structures. Furthermore, the elevation is modulated by the distance of each point to the nearest vertex of its parent cell polygon/region...

Grayscale, ambient occlusion render of an animated, physics-driven, nested Voronoi diagram resembling an complex abstract architecture rising from an initially flat plane. Isometric view.

@toxi @nclslbrn this actually reminds me of architecture more than cells... there's a book called African Fractals which covers some super interesting, non-Western city/house layouts (at times, the house reflects the layout of the city), as well as sculpture and other art. But I've only seen it in digital, scanned, super-high-contrast form, so the images take on a similar level of abstraction. Anyway good stuff!

So it turns out if you order something from ebay, the seller uses the worst courier ever (evri aka hermes) who deliver the parcel into your recycle bin without leaving a note, which then gets collected.. That's your fault and you don't get a refund?

trashpandaqc,
@trashpandaqc@mastodon.online avatar

@yaxu this exact thing happened to me a month ago, except more likely theft from the front entrance. now at a stalemate where ebay wants "proof" that is wasn't delivered and my landlord won't check the security cameras because this isn't a "security" matter. maddening.

relistening to this one - we're surrounded by so much functional sound design it's relaxing to get into something using the same techniques impressionistically

I recently saw an open call for a residency of up to four weeks in the US where up to 10 participants were offered $500 each. This doesn't include accommodation (no mention of travel either).

Is this serious?!

Even if it was for locals only this would be a bit of a bad thing.

trashpandaqc,
@trashpandaqc@mastodon.online avatar

@hellocatfood @yaxu @mewo2 this kind of thing has discouraged me a lot (as a non-academic) from even looking into residencies. I think at the very least there needs to be a different term for residencies that pay your basic needs vs ones where you have to pay.

I guess in some cases the excuse is "we'll help you find grants to cover it" but, that means even more application time and basically days of work to apply for an unpaid temporary job.

trashpandaqc,
@trashpandaqc@mastodon.online avatar

@yaxu @hellocatfood @mewo2 exactly, maybe they believe a little too much in exposure...

I also think the application end of things can be overcomplicated, if you look at residencies as jobs. If I'm applying for for a couple weeks of freelance video work, that might take a two-paragraph email and my portfolio. For many residencies that want a similar amount of work, it could take exponentially more writing, plus reaching out to references for letters - it's a much bigger time investment.
