the arc of arc from “the browser company” wasn’t very long—and through the power of VC funding it inevitably bent towards AI

@zachleat I fell for this one and I feel foolish.

I’m considering giving Vivaldi a try before returning to Firefox. The UI change of pace was stimulating.

Did anyone here have a Dreamcast back in the day? I remember seeing them out in the wild, and it always looked ahead of it's time, especially in connectivity.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan Back in the day? Mine’s still hooked up!

I gave a mini talk about the console a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXwnyu5FFlY

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan @KeefJudge A 56k modem was built in, a broadband adapter was sold separately.

In many ways, the original Xbox was a spiritual Dreamcast successor. Xbox was the next home console to ship with a modem (broadband by then), there’s a Windows CE logo on every Dreamcast, and the consoles share a button layout (even the colors).

Over 100 games had online features. As of today, 36 are still playable online thanks to fan-run servers: https://dreamcastlive.net/games/

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@robb @andycarolan To my knowledge, Time Crisis was never released for Dreamcast! Confidential Mission is similar in tone, and there was a Virtua Cop port.

(The most fondly remembered Dreamcast light gun games are arguably The House of the Dead series.)

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan Sega’s cash reserve was always tiny compared to Sony and Nintendo. Since Microsoft already had a hand in the Dreamcast, I could see an alternate reality where they acquired Sega instead of starting their Xbox division from scratch.

@hexagoncircle I was sharing a recent article of yours with my team and I just wanted to say how well-designed your site is, particularly the article pages. I adore the skewed headlines, the iconography (that progress indicator with the stop watch is brilliant) and the playfulness of your quotes and asides.

Have a great day! 🤘

The flaw with portable chargers: you have to charge them. I only need it in emergencies by which time I’ve nearly always forgotten to charge it 🫠

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@sophie I have one that is always dead when I need it, and one that always seems to be almost fully charged no matter how long it sits in a drawer (which is worrisome in its own way)

Heh, whatever skeleton crew is still maintaining iTunes Store seems to not be doing so well. All of the music I’ve ever purchased is suddenly “hidden”, leaving it in a broken state in the Music app.

Needed to go to iTunes Store → Account → Downloads and Purchases → Hidden Purchases and use the awful, slow, utterly broken UI to “unhide” them. Had to manually click [Unhide] so many times I got rate-limited.

After all these years, it’s finally time to see what all the fuss is about

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@DavidDarnes I doctor mine with a pinch of cumin, some garlic, some black pepper and a generous portion of chili powder, then cut some sausage and stir it in at the end.

(Alternatively, I’ve added some lao gan ma chili crisp, which is delicious but monopolizes the flavor a tad too much to retain that nostalgic taste.)

A writing tip for myself in the future: delete every use of “…for me…,” “in my opinion,” “some might disagree,” “I think,” etc. etc. All of these make your writing frail and cowardly, absent of any self-confidence. You can have opinions without apologizing for them! Jeez!

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@fonts I’ll admit to doing more of this after my “Seriously, Don’t Use Icon Fonts” article resulted in the most passionate backlash I’ve personally received from my writing. Hearing multiple people accuse me of dogmatic, black-and-white thinking (which so isn’t me) was more upsetting than I recognized at the time.

I probably overcorrected. Will have to keep an eye on that now.

I spoke at 18 different events from 2008 to 2017, when I decided to take a break. I’m feeling the itch again, but I’d love to ease back into it with smaller, remote gatherings (meetups, etc.).

Any suggestions for which events might like to hear from a passionate, multidisciplinary, business-owning web design weirdo like me?

Is it worth it maintaining a version of my responsive puzzle game esviji in Google Play Store?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.esviji.twa

Google requires periodic “artificial life support” to check the app is still relevant: API version update, app links from websites, developer account, etc.

The version has been available and installable on its own domain for years,
without any required maintenance:

Is it a trend to have VERY BIG BODY TEXT? I swear I keep seeing like 20px text on people’s websites and if anything it makes it harder for me to read. Easy enough to adjust of course, but I’m surprised I guess?

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@sophie Earlier today I explained to someone why 11px body copy wasn’t ideal. So I’ll admit after so many years there is a rebellious part of my brain that kinda loves to see the opposite extreme. But audience is so important, and there’s a practical limit.
