Am I the only person who thinks the output from generative image “AI” looks like dogshit?

Everything has this weird low calorie sugar substitute flavour to it.

tylersticka,

@adrian You are not.

It is… let’s say “interesting”… to learn how much higher my standards apparently are. 😕

I know I've said this before, but my NAS is doing some wild disc activity at the moment.

I've checked the logs, and aside from me logging in or accessing it, there's nothing obvious going on 🤔

FWIW, Synology Discstation 218 running the latest version of DSM.

If anyone has any thoughts, please ping me.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan I wouldn’t know if this was occurring since my Diskstation is in a closet 😅

Crossing my fingers that Synology’s NAS health reporting is accurate! 🤞

Hey #typography friends, any recommendations for a Freight Sans alternative I could self-host for a reasonable price, ideally from an independent foundry? I want a modern, humanist sans with a similar cartoonish bounce to the bolder weights, but I’d like to cut the Adobe Fonts cord for my personal site.

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@scott Interesting, thanks!

(Going to stare intensely now at my name in the type tester trying to decide if it’s worse than what I have or just different 🧐)

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@scott These are solid recommendations.

Neutronic’s got that bold bounce, but maybe a few too many convex curves? And Vesterbro might be just one step too removed from that handwriting rhythm. (I am getting so nitpicky for a guy who uses web-safe fonts for his body copy 😅)

I want to display an SVG on my website.

Should I just put the straight into the HTML, or should I Base64 encode it and stick it in an element?

Why?

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@Edent It depends! https://cloudfour.com/thinks/svg-icon-stress-test/

(Well, sort of: I never recommend base64 for SVGs data URIs, it’s redundant to create a text representation of a format that’s already text!)

💅 Some of you already noticed but I have a new site design. I couldn't resist making a site using @simplebits's Cartridge font. There's a few little bugs and changes to make but it's mostly there now.

Acronyms like MPA (multi-page app) and SSR (server-side rendering) may seem silly to seasoned web designers and developers. I know my first thought was, “Isn’t that how the web works by default?”

But speaking as an agency owner, these buzzwords can be really helpful. If an organization has been all-in on SPAs for the past five years (and many have been), it’s a smaller leap to pitch them an MPA than “what you were doing five years ago.”

And look, I know these terms are being used by some frameworks to spin performance workarounds as cutting-edge new features. The frustration and skepticism is understandable.

I’m just saying there may be a silver lining. “Responsive design” was an easier sell than “liquid, but wait hear me out there are things called media queries.” So maybe MPA and SSR will be easier than “let’s start over, that was rough and browsers are better now.”

Just sharing this entry from my user manual again, as despite my best efforts I'm still being ghosted by a friend, and I don't know why.

What drains me —

Being ghosted. Seriously, please don't do this.

I really should elaborate on what negative effects this has on my wellbeing, but I won't.

If you have a personal website: what is your URL and why did you pick it? Is it your name? Is it a nickname/alias? Or something else? And are you happy with it or would you choose a different domain name today?

tylersticka,
@tylersticka@social.lol avatar

@matthiasott It’s my name. I’m always surprised by people who think it’s a pseudonym, but I guess I don’t meet too many people with my last name.

My site had other names when I was a teenager, mostly because my parents told me not to use my full name on the internet (before Facebook completely normalized that, for better or worse).

Years into my career I managed to secure my last name (sticka.com), but it felt weird to change it by that point.

I feel like we're living in a world where somehow it got more important to earn 1 billion dollars than make 1 billion people happy. How can something like that even happen? Aren't we supposed to be social beings who stick together for survival?

I know the answer is probably capitalism, but is it really as simple as that? 🤔 All this selfishness and greed, hoarding of wealth and focus on tearing each other down instead of propping each other up…

It really gets me down sometimes. 😔

I’ve been a full-time web designer since 2007.

In that time, I’ve worked with a bunch of different orgs shipping a bunch of different projects to millions of users, published hundreds of articles, presented at a dozen or so conferences, taught college classes and won some awards.

I have been a guest on one podcast.

I’ve been invited on podcasts five other times. Twice, the company that funded the podcast went under before our scheduled recording. Three times I’ve simply been ghosted.
