Research fellow at Trinity College Dublin, working at the intersection of cities, technology & climate change adaptation. Sometimes, I work on computational geometry libraries. Yes, I'm literally and metaphorically a cocktail-dispensing bat.

As if the prospect of a “programming language conference” wasn't unpalatable enough – three days in a foul conference centre surrounded by the socially anxious and/or inept – having to suffer through a load of angry men in their forties screaming about masks is, I think, the final nail in the coffin. I'm going to start a programming language forest camp instead. A local duck has kindly agreed to talk about recent advances in practical approaches to substructural typing, so it’s got legs I think.

The chances that Helena the otter – who is my friend, very interested in perf engineering in the Python compiler btw: – will ever send me a link to the Cochrane review of studies related to physical measures to reduce or prevent the spread of respiratory viruses is essentially zero; she is an otter. She may wish to show me the rock tool she keeps in her chest pouch, though.

Are there other Weird Studies listeners lurking around here? It’s a relatively recent discovery for me and I am having such a good time in the archive.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@tealtan @kissane I had not been keeping up because I also do not really like pod casts, but omggggg (I listen to ONE pod cast with something like regularity and I will tell you what it is if you want. It's like, not the secret name of god or anything). Anyway I'm off to murmur about black stars, strange moons &c

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@tealtan @kissane [sidebar: does "In Our Time" count as a pod cast? I tend to think of it as more of an eternal and implacable feature of the landscape. Did we really know a time before it? Can we conceive of a time in which we exist, but it does not? Melvin Bragg has always been here, a kind of cultural Tom Bombadil if you like]

I’m seeing a lot of chatter about “this kind of sophistication indicates a state-level actor”. Does it? How so? I haven’t seen any analysis that shows that resources only available to a state actor were required. Has the whiff of xenophobia about it.

This is the most exciting badge we've ever made ...and it's the only badge we're making from now on.

My sole contribution was messaging "FRAMEWORK BADGE!!!1!" at the badge team in the early hours of the morning.

They made it happen, and they nailed it.

So, can someone teach me how I might get involved in some small-scale short-selling of stocks?

If I've understood it right, a) the stock market thrives on irrational sentiment, b) the tech bubble is at the huffing-balloons-and-groping stage of the party, c) shorting stocks which subsequently tank real hard can make you some money, and d) shorting stocks contributes to the sort of sentiment that makes them tank.

If I have understood this right, I think my duty as a citizen of earth is clear.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@PaulGrahamRaven I mean, it’s unusual to take advice from Keynes, but a lot of people have lost their shirts after failing to heed what he had to say about this: “The market can stay irrational a lot longer than you can stay solvent”.

Easily my most controversial academic opinion is that autoethnography is not a valid form of scholarly enquiry. The source of authority I rely on for my claim is that I have read some autoethnographic work and it is self-indulgent nonsense. An exercise in attempted self-actualisation by the self-obsessed. Its practitioners would be better off writing self-insert light novels, which would at least be an honest reflection of their intentions.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@PaulGrahamRaven I don't know whether any academics follow me, so this is pretty unlikely to make any waves (also I don't argue with people on the internet; why bother when you can just say “Well I'm right ¯_(ツ)_/¯”, mute the thread, and go outside)

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@PaulGrahamRaven Hah. I also freely acknowledge that it is an extremely cranky and subjective opinion!

Secondary to earlier thread: Gibson’s absolutely a southern writer no matter how long he’s lived in Canada, and it’s interesting how many reviewers both in and out of genre circles miss that.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@kissane did I ever tell you about going to see him talk at the South Bank, seeing various esteemed academics posit Complex Cyberpunk Theories at him, to which he inevitably relied “…no”? It was wonderful

“The present IP system can be abused by actors powerful enough to abuse all of our legal systems, therefore we need a much more restrictive IP system” really isn’t clicking for me.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@vruba No, I think about your “What’s being proposed may not be great, but this assemblage of dogshit argument against it also isn’t doing anyone any good; we should think more carefully about it” position often.

urschrei,
@urschrei@mastodon.social avatar

@vruba oh I know – I don’t think I’ll ever shake the reflexive tendency to understate that they baked into me over there. You pay a high price for taking the queen’s shilling.

I tried to reverse-engineer my scrambled footnotes in Obsidian and what I've learned is that when it "reindexes" the footnotes, it's literally separating pieces of each note and scrambling them into other notes, so like the article title for note #1 is now combined with the publication name from note maybe , the date from noete , and a content warning from somewhere else. (I was using the main footnote plugin and Linter, nothing fancy.)

I…have never seen anything quite like this!
