Hrm.

Interesting choice. I can think of a few other people who have some Trek experience that might be able to produce a Star Trek film, but ok.

I'm sure up at the top there's totally different chiefs in charge of TV versus film and they don't interact with each other at all and don't want to. It's a bummer.

@maleandroids Technically anything before Discovery is now a prequel, so I'm not concerned about that per se. I am concerned as a fan who's outside about honoring what's been established and not starting a whole new timeline, or at least making it clear if you're starting a whole new timeline.

Y'all see that these AI generated "movies", "videos" and "commercials" are straight up garbage, right?

@jpaskaruk Geez. Unless it's a joke, that's horrifying.

Jenny Nicholson's Star Wars Hotel video is brilliant. So wonderfully sums up everything wrong with Disney's way of doing things.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@4gottenfuturist It's a fantastic piece of researched, and lived, work. Just A+. Up there with Defunctland's FastPass documentary

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@4gottenfuturist Yep. At the end of the video, I couldn't disagree that it was a good thing that it failed.

Microsoft’s new “Recall” feature will record everything you do on your PC

Recall uses Copilot+ PC features "to take images of your active screen every few seconds."

It's fun to blame Red Lobster going down because of all you can eat shrimp, but no one really emphasizes this bit:

"A private equity firm bought the chain ten years ago from Darden Restaurants.... The firm, Golden Gate Capital, funded the deal partly by selling Red Lobster's real estate.

That meant the chain had to start paying rent. That's now a major financial factor in Red Lobster's bankruptcy filing"

VC again leaving a trail of destruction behind them

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@Ertain The equity companies who extract out that rent, pocket it, and let the company burn behind them.

@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@CStamp Between them and only managing for shareholder returns, a huge amount of damage has been done to the globe.

Oh, noe, two branches of the same hydra have different ovation counts for the same Cannes film. And drastically different.

Someone's gotta true the count! We demand the truth! 😛

Currently experiencing the Canadian version of the ‘marshmallow test’ — seeing which of my neighbours can’t wait until Victoria Day tomorrow to set off their fireworks and are instead setting the off randomly throughout the weekend.

virtualbri,

@jvschrag Similarly, Los Angeles "Fourth of July" is from mid-June to mid-July.

virtualbri, to movies
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

Ah it's Cannes season, where Variety tracks the lengths of each standing ovation, because that's a barometer of...something I guess.

Will the 11 minute ovation for feminist body horror movie "The Substance" be beat? Who knows? Who cares?

What poor reporters have to actually time the ovations and report back? is it the one filing the story? An intern? Who decided that was worthy of the story? That's what I want to know.

I think Charles has the best portrait of any “royal” in history. Bloody red captures his family’s reign.

@StillIRise1963 He's surfacing out of the blood the monarchy has spilled over the centuries....

virtualbri, to poetry
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

I didn't know Len Pennie's book "Poyums" finally came out, but I've enjoyed her Scots word of the day and her poetry for ages, so it's nice to finally give a bit back.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-poyums/dp/B0BZQ6F37W/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=

Of course I had to hear the audiobook as well, because her performances actually make me remember what poetry's supposed to do. (I'd see if you can buy it from a better source than...ahem, this link.)

Here's a good one: Phantom Menace Theatrical versus 4K release.

Does the digital noise reduction hammer the details, especially in faces? Is the new color shift to blue better? You decide

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@CStamp But if the 35mm version was transferred to DVD just looking like that, yikes.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@Freudinshade I'm not a fan of Digital Noise Reduction on 35mm. Kills too much unless it's put on shot by shot. So much high frequency detail, like skin, just obliterated.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@tptigger Yeah for sure that's one thing. Maybe not setting it around a nebulous trade blockade created for...reasons would have helped too.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

I think it would be a public service to go to all the "little libraries" in front of houses in my neighborhood to remove the Malcolm Gladwell books and pulp them instead.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@Daedalus He's one of those pop-sociologists who takes anecdotes and spins them into "theories" that don't hold up but sound great in the press to sell a lot of books.

One of the few people I've actually stopped reading and thrown the book across the room because it made me so mad.

10K hours to become an expert is one of his classic chestnuts.
