What do they even have to discuss anyways? It’s not like the GOP even bothers with a policy platform anymore other than hurt outsiders, obstruct, and get money. The RNC “learn more” link to their platform just directs to a list of committee procedures. Even if there are individuals with integrity they have mostly left or retired, with the remaining standing for nothing but greed and paranoia, aligning politically with authoritarian dictators. The electoral college is going to bury us propping up two parties if GOP cannot clean house and a thirty party cannot gain political momentum to compete with the democratic party.

Do you think it would be important to understand the clinical requirements, outcomes, and medical consensus of the previous policy vs a blanket ban before endorsing a ban? Isn’t the point of blockers to slow development so informed consent about transitioning can be made?

Names from other languages I think are especially obvious for the self taught or avid reader. Euler, Goethe, Camus, etc

What could have been done to increase the valuation higher and maintain goodwill with the community:

  1. Cut CEO pay by 90%
  2. Pay mods as employees, think of the GM/guide structure of early mmos where you start as a volunteer for a free sub but can work your way up
  3. Subscriptions to remove ads
  4. Push ads in API for third party apps to host your ads, remove for subscribed users
  5. Profit sharing from ads and subs with top content creators

I wonder which church he goes to and if they ever endorse a specific person or party that would be grounds to revoke their tax exempt status? Might be worth attending a few local churches this year as an ‘out of towner’ to record the homily on your phone, you know just to listen to later.

Not really and I don’t think NDT really does either, he’s using pop sci-fi for science outreach to point out the parts of the fiction that are fiction that many of us without a thorough science education may miss or to build interest for science in the general population. I think even if he misses the mark sometimes it’s a valuable thing to attempt and he does nail it occasionally.

Did you know you can significantly degrade the integrity of concrete and cinder blocks using something like dexpan demolition grout and a drill?

Not even close if we’re talking about current users or active contributers. After they shut down third party apps and sided with advertisers over mods there was a huge migration off platform to several other platforms. Many smaller subreddits are ghost towns and the biggest ones that are still active have a smaller participating community, less total votes, and changing norms.

It’s not just eternal September, it’s the same thing that happened when digg died in reverse where communities grew and changed because people were joining. Users are adding site:reddit.com or whatever to Google searches because of SEO general searches are an advertising dumpster fire, but those search results are going to degrade over time along with the site’s quality if they continue to make such shitty decisions for communities and users or people move to other ai based search tools.

A-stamp collector. I’m not really interested in stamp collecting, but that doesn’t mean my whole Identity is anti stamp or even thinking about stamps very often unless some idiot legislates that I can’t get an appendectomy because their formal organization of stamp collectors says it’s against their personal beliefs counter to clinical medical advice.

Do you ever worry that you're secretly a psychopath that unknowingly manipulates people around you?

Someone recently told me that they sometimes feel gaslighted around me because I effortlessly make them question their beliefs and feelings. Hearing that didn’t sit well with me, especially since I’ve been pondering the question in the title for quite some time....

From the wiki article describing the play/movie the phrase comes from:

“In the story, the husband secretly dims and brightens the indoor gas-powered lighting but insists his wife is imagining it, making her think she is going insane.”

Imo it’s when someone is deceived by a person who lies about the actual state of affairs/reality to make the other person question what they experienced as credible. I don’t think that’s the same as when someone helps question beliefs in general because skepticism is good to make sure we aren’t self deluding, but if that person is lying about reality to manipulate them it becomes bad/gaslighting.

Another example I think is from it’s always sunny in Philadelphia in the episode where Dennis and Mac go to live in the suburbs and Mac asks Dennis if he hears a beeping the audience can hear and Dennis says he can’t until he blows up saying of course he can when berating Mac. Dennis is angry at Mac and in retaliation he gaslights him about the annoying beeping sound to manipulate him into questioning if the beeping is real or an audio hallucination.

Edit: just realized it’s possible it’s always sunny was doing an homage to Gaslight in that episode as they’ve done similar things in the past with other older movies and TV shows

I’m curious even with the different ways of stressing syllables if there is also a causal link between population density and speaking speed, similar to walking speed differences measured in rural and urban environments. Like if there is some mechanism like walking quickly to get through timed crosswalks vs larger group conversations with less time to get your point across or jump in without interrupting.

Edit: I also noticed as an English only speaker when speaking with Indians who speak English and one or more Indian languages they will sometimes repeat the last sentence you say as you finish saying it as a way to jump into the conversation or indicate agreement or having something to say but I’m not sure if that is culturally Indian or more broadly Asian, etc. if anyone has some insight into that language style.

Fascists look like idiots when interviewed until they get violent. They have no definitions or reasonable arguments for their position because bigotry isn’t a reasonable position and to them anyone who challenges them is an other, an outsider who deserves to be dehumanized. As long as they can convince people to be scared and angry they are safe to exploit hate. The more people collaborate, work together towards shared values, participate in local school and city board meetings, the less power these idiots can steal.

90s style adventure games like Sam and Max hit the road, day of the tentacle, monkey Island, Indiana Jones, etc. Lots of comedy you can’t hear again for the first time, and puzzles that can be memorable.

scummVM can be used to run those games and runs on basically everything, phones, tablets, desktop.

I think it is telling how difficult it can be to accurately predict based on polls and all other available data by how rare it is for a professional analyst to make an accurate prediction on something like a federal election 12 or 8 months away.

whotookkarl,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

There were plenty of predictions that got the winner right, but the amount that accurately predicted the ~51/47 are much fewer and I believe the rarity is an indicator that accurate prediction is not as clear and straight forward as some may expect.

I think it depends on the state and if it’s certain businesses like a family owned business or certain exceptions. I was delivering papers and mowing laws at 12 but that was in the 90s and it wasn’t to support me it was just on the weekends to have some money for video games, going to the movies, buy junk food, etc. I didn’t get a normal wage job until I was 16 working after school and weekends, and didn’t get a job that actually paid enough to support myself (with a roommate) until 19/20.

The wealth class doesn’t care because they have their own personal planes they use instead of the plebian flying busses.

ycharts.com/companies/BA/stock_buyback paints a grim picture where all of the time and money that should have been going to safety and quality standards were going to stock price inflation from buybacks. 1 billion is not enough, it should be 10+ billion all invested into hiring and training FAA investigators and QC to meet those standards, and an anti trust suit to break up Boeing.

whotookkarl,
@whotookkarl@lemmy.world avatar

100-200 million is going to do nothing to dissuade Boeing from continuing to race to the bottom with their QC, there have been multiple recent years they bought back stock at 4, 5, 6 billion per year. It’s not just about restitution to the victims, it’s also about using fines to fix the systemic problems to keep it from happening again.

As a dude with limited fashion sense suits look funny to me, like pajamas with a night cap or short pants with stockings or powdered wigs just feels very archaic and out dated. I could see cloaks coming back at some point just as knee length hooded sweaters or hooded overcoats without fasteners. Capes look too much like wearing a blanket around depending on the material I think to catch on anytime soon.
